Wren
I close my eyes and all I see is utter blackness. I exhale, and get on with my wish.
I wish that I will find the one.
When I open my eyes, Arlo is sitting in front of me. Her long, chestnut hair draped over her shoulders with her arms crossed. She gives me a dumb expression and I sift a laugh.
"You at least have to make a wish, Arlo. That's what 11:11 is for."
She rolls her eyes and then closes them. I see a hint of a smile on her face and notice the pastel eyeshadow she's wearing. Some of the moonlight shines on her, making her glow. For someone who seems depressed, she's a great person to talk to.
When she finally opens her eyes, she purses her lips together and stretches them to one side.
"What did you wish for?" She asks.
"I can't say. Or else it won't come true." I smile.
"I never understood that. Why is it if you say something you desire, then it won't happen? It just doesn't make any sense." Arlo crosses her arms.
"Some things were made to not make sense."
She rolls her eyes yet again and then focuses back on me. I knew this party was going to be boring, but I didn't know that I was going to meet this amazing girl.
She's different than anyone else I've talked to. I believe she's good with stating her opinion, but is shy around people she doesn't know that well. I don't know much about her, but I'd like to know more.
She takes out her phone and then take out mine due to an instinct.
"Hey, Arlo?" I ask, unsure of whether or not my next question is a good one.
"Yes?"
"Would you mind if we traded phone numbers? So, whenever we feel like shit, we have each other? That probably sounded really corny." I laugh and rub my arm.
She laughs as well, "That would be great. It wasn't corny, it was... inspirational."
We go to our contacts page and then swap phones. I add in my information and then take a picture of myself smiling. She sticks out her tongue and makes some ridiculous face. I chuckle and slap my leg and then she hands me my phone.
Our moment is interrupted as a drunk couple begins to have a heavy make-out session before our eyes.
"Can you believe that this is for charity?" Arlo looks over at me.
"I don't even understand how they're raising money for it."
"Do you think this is something we aren't supposed to understand?" She refers back to my previous comment.
"No idea, but either way, I don't want to know where they're getting the money."
Arlo laughs loudly and then stands up. I tense up as she walks away.
"Where are you going?" I ask.
"I'm getting away from the scene," She points to the couple, "I'm probably going to go home."
I run over to where she is and follow her out of the house, "Don't leave yet, would you want to walk around?"
She considers my offer and then shrugs her shoulders.
"Sure. I guess I'd like spending some more time with you. It beats going home to my aunt and uncle's house."
"Wow, it's that bad?"
Her eyes widen and she begins to nod slowly. I sigh and put my hands in my pockets as we begin to stroll down the block.
"That's rough. So, Arlo, what's your favorite color?" I avoid the depressing topics.
"That's random. I guess red. What about you?" She tucks a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
"Blue."
"Why did you want to know?" She starts laughing.
"I'd like to get to know more about you." I see her cheeks turning her favorite color, "You're really nice. I don't understand how you of all people are depressed."
"I can say the same for you. You say you're lonely and bitter, but I don't see that. You're one of the nicest people I've ever met." She tilts her head and smiles wide.
There is a moment of silence between us, however nature is making miscellaneous noises. Cicadas chirp and tree branches and leaves rustle as the wind blows into them. Arlo's hair becomes rustled and comes in front of her face. I slowly reach my fingers toward her and grasp some of her soft, silky hair and push it lightly behind her, so that it drapes over her back.
"Thanks." She mumbles as I pull my hand back.
We talk more as we continue walking around. I got to know more about her, and in exchange I gave her information about myself. Her favorite season is winter because she claims that it's different than all of the other seasons with the snow and how there are no leaves on the trees. Her favorite movie is , and has recently been addicted to Starbucks coffee.
"What do you get when you go?" She asks.
"I'm not a coffee drinker." I say aloud, rubbing my arm.
She stares at me in disbelief, "What?"
"I drink it occasionally, but I'm not crazy about it." I shrug.
"I guess that's fair."
We continue blabbering about our lives. Her favorite actor is Robert Downey Jr. and she's watched the Iron Man trilogy over ten times just because he can "rock the suit."
"Out of all of the Avengers, I like Thor the best." I state.
"I guess he's okay. I think he's trying to pull off the Brad Pitt hairdo."
"What would you do if I decided I was going to go for that look?" I pretend to twirl my imaginary long hair.
"I'd probably never talk to you again." She begins to crack up.
When we finish laughing, she stops in front of a large apartment and doesn't walk anymore.
"Wow, I didn't know we would walk this far." She points upward at the building.
"Do you live here?" I ask.
"Yeah. I guess I should go in. It's late and I don't want my aunt and uncle to get worried."
"Oh," I murmur, upset that I can't spend another minute with her, "I guess I'll see you around, then."
She flashes a smile and then closes the door. She waves her hand the slightest bit and then heads up the stairs ahead.
When she leaves I wander outside of her apartment hoping that she'll come racing down the stairwell and then spend some more time with me. However, minutes go by and there is no one at the door.
Despite the fact that she didn't come down again after going upstairs, I grin at myself and look back on the great night.
I guess I found the one. Thanks, 11:11.
