Lights parked in the local park. "She's in there," she said. "Becky should be there too. I'm pretty sure she is."
I nodded, looking out towards the park. Running across the mulch was a small girl with dark auburn hair. The curls of her hair bounced as she hopped from foot to foot. Her skin was the color of light caramel. She seemed to be no older than five. Her giggles were the sweetest of all angels.
"That's her," I concluded. "That's Olyvette?"
Lights giggled softly, nodding. "That's her. Ain't she the cutest kid you ever seen? And she mad sweet too. Like how Tia used to be like. It's crazy."
I nodded, smiling at the giggly little girl. "Thank you, Lights." I reached over and hugged her. "As soon as I can get to my bank account I'll send you some money."
"You welcome!" She hugged me back. "You still have money? Even after the will?"
I looked at her, confused. "What?"
"Nothing! Nothing. Go get your kid and your wife, Michael. Go!" She began pushing me out of the car, nearly cheering me on.
I did as she said and got out the car, trying so hard not to split my face with a smile.
That feeling soon went away as I got closer to the mulch. I immediately took a seat at the closest bench to watch the encounter between Olyvette and two girls that seemed to be a few years older than her.
"Can I play princesses with you two?" Her hopeful eyes looked up at the two blonde haired girls.
"No," said the older looking one. "We're sisters and our dad is the king. You can't be our sister because you're black."
"Well, I can be a princess from another castle," Olyvette suggested. "My dad can be the king too!"
The other girl laughed. "Black people weren't royalty, dummy. And where is your dad anyway?"
Olyvette looked down at her fidgeting fingers. "He's.. he's away.."
They both laughed in unison. "Oh what happened? He left to go to the store and never came back?"
Was I away for so long that things like this got worse instead of better? Where was this little brat's parents?
I was officially pissed off. And what did I look like, letting these little girls speak to my daughter that way?
I stood from my bench and walked over to the three girls. "Excuse me," I interrupted.
Olyvette's face lit up at the sight of me. "Daddy?"
I smiled down at her. "Yes, baby." I looked at the other girls and gestured to Oly. "I am this girl's father. Is there anything you want to say to me?"
They stared at me with wide eyes and shook their heads. "No sir."
"Great," I kneeled down to their level and gave a smile. "I'm not sure where you got those jokes from but they're not funny at all. Just because she's black, it doesn't mean that she doesn't have a dad. Something that they don't teach you in school is that black people were kings and queens way long before white people. So while you two can be princesses, Olyvette here will be the queen. Is that alright with you, Queen Olyvette?"
She shook her head with a big toothy smile. It was then that I noticed that she was missing one of her top teeth and one at the bottom.
"Nope," she decided, adding an English accent. "I don't want to play with these peasants anymore. I want to play on the tire swing!"
I looked at the two girls with a shrug. "It has been decided." I stood and took Olyvette's hand. "Queen Olyvette is now leaving the building!"
Olyvette's giggle filled the air as we walked to the tire swing. She began to struggle getting in until I picked her up and set her inside. I held the tire and began to twist it in a circle.
She looked up at me again, examining my features. "I knew you weren't gone for real."
"And how'd you know that?" I looked back at her with a raised brow.
She held onto the chain of the swing. "I don't know. I guess I could feel it."
"Ah," I continued to twirl the tire as the chain got tighter.
"But why did you leave?"
Her question broke my heart. How could I answer that and she's only five? "Let's wait for your mother to tell you that, okay?"
She nodded, looking into the hole. "Okay!"
"Are you ready," I asked, bringing the chain to its tightest twist.
"Yup!" She squeezed her eyes shut and lifted her face to the sky.
"One... Two..." I pushed the tire up for it to swing back and forth. "Three!"
As soon as I let go, the chain untwisted and the swing swung back and forth. Her happy scream shook the trees. "Daddy!!!"
I laughed hard at the sight of her having fun as I stood back. But several feet ahead of us stood bigger hair and slightly wider hips. Her breasts filled perfectly and that does not mean that they weren't perfect before.
My wife stood still, shocked at the sight of me.
"Hi," I spoke to break the silence between us.
"Hey," she let out a cracked laugh.
Not two seconds later, we both ran into each other's arms, the happiest tears came down my cheek.
I finally had her back into my arms. I could finally sleep at night now that I had finally met my daughter. And they were both happy to see me.
"She's beautiful," I said. "She's so beautiful. And you have no idea how much I've missed you." I held her tight but I tried not to break her. "I kept writing to you, hoping you would write back until they told me I was dead to you and they weren't sending shit. Hell, I was really surprised they let me out."
"I don't care, Michael," She laughed more. "You're here. That's all that matters to me."
I couldn't help but to laugh along and kiss her deeply before saying what I missed saying to her in person. "I love you so much."
She finally replied, "I love you too."
