The first touch

There was a moment of silence between the two teenagers. A boy with slicked back hair used his free hand to scratch the back of his head. There was an unsure smile on his face as he looked down at his new cheery friend who had suddenly grabbed his hand into her own. The moment they had touched the girl's world had dyed in colour, or so she was saying. She kept excitedly pointing at everything, trying to name all the colours she could see.

This is troublesome, The boy thought but he didn't have the heart to admit the truth. Once a person touched their soulmate, they could finally see all the colours. But there was something bothering the boy, despite the girl being able to see the colours, his world was still black and white.

"Isn't it pretty? So this is what colours are!" The girl exclaimed loudly, turning to face her apparent soulmate. Her dark brown eyes were shining with happiness of finding her soulmate. The boy swallowed. He had never been this nervous about speaking, being so afraid of the consequences.

"Yes, it's very pretty," He muttered an answer, trying to look as happy as the girl was. The girl smiled even more brightly, if that was even possible. Then the silence returned. The boy felt guilty for lying but he really didn't have the heart to ruin this girl's happiness. He would even pretend to see colours if it came to that.

Few years later...

"Yo, Jace."

"Yeah, dude?"

"Should we just ditch this place and go play some video games at my place?"

A shoe with sharp heels came flying at Jace's friend, Keita, who was sitting next to him on the sofa next to the changing rooms. The shoe almost hit Jace because Keita dodged the attack but luckily they both had quick reflexes from playing basketball for many years.

"Excuuuuse me, did I hear talk about escaping?" Keita's girlfriend, Aria, who had just come out of the dressing room, questioned after she noticed that she had missed. Her other shoe was missing as she had just thrown it at her boyfriend.

Keita quickly grabbed the shoe from the floor and hugged it close to his chest. There was genuine fear in his eyes as he jumped up from the sofa that he and Jace had been sitting on together.

"You can't hurt me 'cause I have your weapon!" Keita yelled and stepped back to get into defence mode. Aria rolled her eyes at him and sneered at her boyfriend.

"Did you forget that shoes come in pairs?" She asked took off her other shoe, lifting it over her head. Only a small squeal could be heard from Keita's mouth as he ran off with the other shoe. Aria started running after him and soon they were running all over the shop. Gladly, the shop's owner was Aria's older sister, Alya, so causing a ruckus wouldn't get them into too much of a trouble.

Jace watched them with an awkward smile on his face but his attention moved from the two to the other girl with them who had just stepped out of the dressing room. She was holding two same kind of dresses. In Jace's eyes both of them were pretty much coloured the same so he squinted.

"Jace, which do you think I should wear?" The girl, Serene, asked and put the right dress infront of her body. She then did the same thing with the other dress. Each time she stopped for a while and made eye contact with Jace.

Jace didn't know what to say as he didn't see anything different in the colours, they were both black in his eyes. He stood with his feet glued to floor as he tried to find a way to escape this situation.

"I think the right one suits you better:" He sputtered, sounding like the last part of his sentence was a record from a broken disc. Serene's face sifted as she looked at the dress Jace prefered.

"I'm not sure if it's my colour... Aria! What do you think?"

Aria immediately ran to her friend's aid as she heard her call for an opinion and Keita followed after her, stopping next to Jace. She closely examined the dresses and after a while of thinking she lifted her head and pointed at the other dress that Jace hadn't decided on.

"Blue is more your colour, it brings out your eyes more!" Aria announced and looked back at the two boys for approval. Keita, who most likely just agreed so he wouldn't get chased again, nodded. Jace nodded too, feeling a bit bad when Serene looked at him with questioning eyes.

Serene looked down and then back at Aria who was brightly smiling in front of her.

"But Jace prefers the purple one..." She mumbled and sighed. She seemed sincerely confused as for what she should choose.

"Oh? Nah, you don't need to worry about it, he has no taste in fashion! Right, Jace?" Aria declared and turned to look at Jace with a murderous smile. This of course went unnoticed by Serene but Jace and Keita both flinched.

"Y-yeah, sorry about that Serene." Jace apologized as he changed his positions awkwardly. Serene looked at Jace with unsure eyes but she finally decided on the purple dress.

As Aria and Serene made their way to the counter, Jace and Keita went outside of the shop, in the mall's hallway to wait for the girls. They didn't say anything to each other as they leaned against the shop's giant window.

Jace stood up straight after a while and as he was about to say something to Keita, he bumped into someone. He quickly turned around to apologize and he noticed that this person had fallen to the floor.

Jace offered his hand towards the boy he had bumped into, to help him stand up. The boy didn't lift his gaze from the ground but he did take the hand that was being offered towards him.

As he grabbed Jace's hand, something happened. The world started to fill itself with different colours, suddenly the black and white world Jace had been living in had been painted in colour.

The boy in the ground seemed to experience the same thing because he lifted his head and his amber eyes were wide open and looking around. Jace felt his heart skip a beat when those bright eyes met his own through the long brown bangs. But this moment didn't last long as Keita, who had been looking at the two girls in the shop, turned to look at his friend.

"Hey, dude-" Keita started but stopped as he saw his friend holding some random guy's hand.

Jace happened to notice this and he quickly let go, trying to come up with a excuse. Before he could say anything the two girls stepped out of the shop.

"Hey, you two! We are ready, let's go eat some ice cream!" Aria exclaimed as she grabbed onto Keita's arm.

Jace muttered something in agreement and then looked at where the fallen boy was. But to his surprise, there was no one on the floor anymore. He started to look around but he didn't see this person anywhere.

Serene stepped closer to Jace and tugged on his sleeve. He turned to his girlfriend and immediately struggled to pretend that he just didn't see her in colour for the first time.

"Are you alright?" Serene asked as her hand moved down to take Jace's hand. She squeezed his hand and he didn't have any choice but to just smile and nod to reassure her, he was too speechless to use words.
