The London Animal Shelter, despite its generic name, was unique. At least to the pets that lived there. This shelter saved lives, and some of these pets know no other home. However, this is a story for another time. Our story starts one spring night.

The shelter was closed.

All the humans left, closed the doors, locked the gates. The residents were all fast asleep, except for 7 of the older kittens. They shook at the gates, trying to get out. Eventually, they gave up and talked through the bars. They couldn't sleep and had nothing better to do.

"So...", one of the kittens, Imarina, said. "What should we discuss tonight?"

Another kitten, Decima, rolled around in her cage. "Doesn't matter."

Candelaria, the youngest of the seven, asked a question. "How come we're the only ones not to be adopted?"

"You're kidding.", Decima replied. "Look at all the unadopted cats in this room alone."

Candelaria sighed. "I know but, they don't really like us."

"We have each other.", Imarina said. "Aren't we enough?"

Another kitten, Kalliope, just a little older than Candelaria, twirled her fur. "Not really. I want to be able to make a lot of friends and be famous and popular!"

"Come on, Kalliope. You don't really think a shelter cat can be all that, do you?", Decima asked, the only voice of sense within the group.

Janessa, the second oldest after Imarina, rolled her eyes. "You don't really want to destroy her dreams, Decima, right? She's only nine."

"Yeah, well I'm only eleven and you're only thirteen." Decima brushed dirt off her paws.

"How savage." Janessa then ignored Decima and started talking to another kitten, Pomponia.

Ottoline, another kitten, who was two months younger than Decima, tried to change the subject. "So, how is the new feeding room?" The cats had been going to a feeding room for breakfast and dinner lately, except for Ottoline, who had to stay in her cage due to her heart condition.

"It's fine.", Candelaria responded. "I'm tired"

With that, the kittens went to sleep.
