"Erg!" Hermione stretches as tall as she can. The book is stubbornly on the top shelf of the library, and refusing to move down.
I must have read up on how to get books out, Hermione thought. But Madam Pince will come soon, and no doubt she'll scold me for reading books above my level-

This thought sends Hermione into a panic. It's only her first year in Hogwarts, they might kick her out if she gets in too much trouble! Even in the rational part of her mind reasons that they certainly won't expel her, she still gets more and more worried.

Maybe I should just give up- Hermione thinks, defeated.

Just then, a tall shadow looms over her. A glimpse of red confirms that yes, it's Ron. The irritating boy who she somehow still hangs out with. He gets on her nerves sometimes with his cluenessness, but she supposes he isn't too bad. After all, he did save her from a troll not too long ago.

In all her thought, Hermione doesn't notice the book in front of her until it's wiggled over her nose.

"Hhuh?" Wow, Hermione, really eloquent.

"Is this that book that you were trying to get down?" Ron asks. Hermione had forgotten just how tall Ron was, how he could reach all the things she couldn't with ease.

"Oh, yes! Thanks, Ron!" Hermione beamed. Hooray! She wouldn't be expelled from Hogwarts anymore! She gave Ron a shining smile, while he looked baffled at her reaction to the book, which was large, thick, dusty, and usually borrowed by harried fifth years studying for OWLs. After all, he had never even considered such books before.

"Um... You're welcome?"

I wish I was tall, thought Hermione enviously. Ron was of course gangly and could reach books up till the fifth shelf, and yet he doesn't spend any time studying at all!

"You're not really that short you know. And I do spend time studying! I just don't love it with my heart, soul and body like you do." Ron replys, irritated. Oops. Did she say that out loud? Hermione scolds herself and her rude mouth, and promises herself to not eat anymore strawberry tarts from the Great Hall for the next 2 days as punishment.

"Oops, sorry. I was just um... thinking out loud? " She quickly apologises, then changes the subject. "Do you want to study here now?"

"Sure." Ron agrees easily, as Harry approaches them.

"What are we talking about?" Harry questions.

"Oh, we were just talking about how short Hermione was-"

"We were not, Ron!" The irate Hermione snaps, so unlike her two-seconds-ago apologetic behaviour. Already her mind is worn out from trying to find who Nicolas Flamel is, facts and details dancing around her head. She storms out of the area, carrying the thick and heavy book in her hands. Ron watches confused as she slams a book down on the table and huffs at them.

"Mate, I think we'd better go. Hermione's mad!" Harry mutters. "You shouldn't have told her she was short."

"But she said so herself!" Ron defends his actions fiercely, still stunned over Hermione's quick mood change.

Harry just shakes his head and leads Ron out of the library.

And Hermione sits at the table alone, suddenly wondering if she had chased away her only friends with her bad temper.
