College, boys, and dented glass

My name is Alexandra and I'm 18 years old. Most people would think that being 18 is the best. You're technically an adult, you can vote, it's senior year and school is almost over, you look good and life is at a good point. But not for me. Being 18 has, so far, been the worst year of my life. So far.

It all started during one very unforgettable summer.

Blair, my best friend, and I had just finished school and it was summer. The summer that we had to get ready for college. It was our last summer of true freedom. We really had to make it count.

I was in my room, drawing, when I heard a small clang against my window glass.

Clank

I ignored it. But it soon came again.

Clank

I got up and walked to my window of the second floor of my house. Straight across from me was Blair's window. One of the perks of living right next to your best friend is that you never really have to call or text each other.

I unlock the latch on the window and pushed it upward.

"Guess what!" Blair said, almost jumping out her window.

I could see the rocks that she had thrown at my window on the grass below us.

"What is it?" I asked.

"I GOT INTO STANFORD UNIVERSITY!!!"

Blair was smiling so big as she held up her acceptance letter.

"OMG! ARE YOU SERIOUS!"

"Yesssss!!!"

We ran down the stairs of our houses and flung ourselves out the door.

We ran over and met each other in the grass between our houses.

Blair was jumping up and down from excitement and I was jumping along with her because I thought that was what we were doing.

After a few more minutes of celebration, I thought that since Blair's application came in I might have got mine back.

I started to walk to my mail box with Blair closely following behind me. I opened the box to find multiple letters, but only one of them was labeled 'Stanford University.' I knew that I wasn't as smart as Blair and trying to get into the number one college in the U.S. is probably a very slim chance.

I grabbed the letter and opened it. Before I read it I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.

Dear Alexandra brown,

My heart was almost beating out of my chest.

We regret to say that...

That was all I needed. I knew I didn't get in just by those first 5 words.

It was heartbreaking. I had worked so hard to try and get into Stanford. Blair snatched the paper from my hands.

"This is an outrage!" She protested.
"You totally deserve to get into Stanford!"

I brushed it off. I really wanted to get in, but I applied to other colleges so I just had to wait to hear from them.

Blair shoved her acceptance letter back in her pocket and we didn't talk about college anymore.

We suddenly noticed some construction workers putting up a frame for a new house in the empty lot next to my house. There was a little "For Sale" sign shoved in the dirt.

"Hm, I wonder who our new neighbor is gonna be?" Blair said.

"Yah."

We walked back to our own houses.

For the rest of the day I watched them build the new house. I was just happy that it helped keep my mind off of school.

•••••

The sun was pouring heavily through my window. I pulled my pillow over my eyes.

Zzzzzzz zzzzzz bang bang bang crash

I could hear the workers outside banging on wood and drilling in nails.

I finally dragged myself out of bed and sighed as my feet hit the cold floor of the hallway. I stepped back into my warm carpeted room and got back in bed. I looked at the clock; it was 8:54

I'll just close my eyes for five more minutes.

I thought.

"5 more minutes later", it was 9:32! I hate it when your 5 minutes turn into 40. I lept out of bed and went to the bathroom to take a shower. I know that during summer you're supposed to sleep in but I've noticed that if you sleep past ten you're more tired then before. I tip-toed along the cold floor, ignoring its freezing abilities.

After my shower I brushed my teeth and got dressed. While I finished pulling on my blue sweatshirt, I could hear Blair throw a relatively large rock at my window.

"Blair you're gonna break the glass!" I yelled at her through the screen.

She ignored me and pointed past me to the window on the other side of my room. I walked over to see 3 people examining the new house with the head construction guy. One was a beautiful woman with long blond hair, the second was a man with glasses, brown hair, and a briefcase, the third person was a boy. He had dark brown hair and he was wearing a leather jacket. He ran his hands through his hair and looked up. He saw me and I ducked under my window. I could hear Blair snickering. I crawled over to my other window. Standing up once I was out of view of the the strange boy, I glared at Blair.

"What about them?" I said calmly, pushing a strand of fly away hair away from my eyes.

Blair rolled her eyes and smiled mischievously.

"What?"

"Nothing." She replied, as friends do when there is something and it amuses them.

"Do you uh...think he's cute." She made a popping sound with her lips and nodded her head in the direction of the house.

I looked back. I did think he was cute but Blair didn't need to know that.

"Oh my gosh! You are so immature." I said hiding my smile.

Blair shrugged and stepped back into her room.

"Just wondering," she watched me like a hawk watches a mouse as if she was trying to drill her eyes into my brain to see what was going on.

"I personally think he is gorgeous." She smirked and she flipped her hair saying the last word in an English accent as she mocked me.

I glared at her again. This was ridiculous! Cute, not cute. Who cares? It's not as if they are gonna move in anyway.
