The small male cat was violently thrown out into the freezing rain from the second story window, his claws wildly scrambling for anything to grab onto. He landed on his back in the bushes, releasing an involuntary yelp of pain from the impact. Another male, a dog, leaned out the window with a smirk on his face. "You can stay out there until the rain stops, you ungrateful little shit!" The dog growls. He then slams the window shut, leaving the cold, wounded cat outside. The purple feline takes a deep breath. He gasps as a sharp pain stabs into his chest. He must have broken something in the fall. He didn't really want to get up. The rain was washing the blood from his wounds and clothing. He didn't have his coat to cover up with, so the less blood the better. Also, there's a high chance that he's stuck in the bushes, and in his weakened state he had no desire to find out. Besides, he didn't have anywhere else to go except the alley because Alfred had locked him out of the office. He relaxes himself, sinks into the bushes and closes his eyes, trying to sleep. Suddenly, he hears a noice in the distance. "Mystery?" a male voice calls. The purple cat recognizes the voice as Rex. The cat flattens his ears and tenses. He hated when Rex comes here alone. Trusting Alfred has never been something Mystery did easily. He hears Alfred's voice from the direction of the entrance to the office. "He just left. He... didn't want to stay here tonight." Alfred states blankly. "Thanks Mr. Alfred!" Rex says cheerfully. "I'll go look for him!" The door slams shut, and Mystery realises he does need to get out of the bush. He tries to squirm his way out, grasping the small branches to pull himself forward. The branches rip his clothes and skin, leaving tiny beads of black blood. At least he could use that as an excuse for why his arms where covered in scratches. He pulls himself almost out of the bushes before falling onto the concrete. He totally miscalculated how tall the bushes where, as they where about a foot off the ground. He pushes himself off the ground, and a spike of pain shoots up his leg. He lets out a sharp scream of pain as he hits the ground again. "Who's there?" Rex squeaks. "Rex... It's Mystery... Hi." Mystery growls. Rex runs up to the purple cat sprawled out on the ground and extends a hand. "Are you okay?" Rex asks. "I just tripped... I think I broke my fucking leg." Mystery responds, grasping Rex's hand and pulling himself up. Rex puts Mystery's arm over his shoulder to support him. "Where'd all those scratches come from?" Rex asks. "Uh... accident at work. Let's just get back to your place, okay?" Mystery responds. Rex nods, and the two start walking.
Rex was practically carrying Mystery, but neither of the two seemed to mind. "Why don't you want to stay at Alfred's place? You typically never go home with me." Rex asked. "Well, I..." Mystery paused, trying to think of a convincing excuse. "I wanted to spend some more time with the most amazing person in my life!" It wasn't a complete lie. Rex smiled joyfully. "Aww, thank you!" He cheerfully replies. They walk in silence for a while until Mystery remembers something he needed to tell the smaller creature. "Uh... Rex?" Mystery asks. "Please, don't talk to Alfred unless I'm with you, okay?" Rex tilts his head to the side. "Why?" He asks. "Look... I don't exactly trust Afred as much as I used to." Mystery sighs. "Then why do you stay with him? You could stay with me if you don't trust him!" Rex protests. Mystery sighs. He hated lying to Rex, but it's to save his life. "Uhh..." Mystery tails off. "Because sleeping in a bed indoors is more comfortable than sleeping on thin pillows in a freezing alleyway? No offence, but..." This was a lie. He slept on the cold floor in the basement of the office. If anything, it was worse than the alleyway. The real reason why he stayed was because the wounds Alfred gave him usually rendered him tired and immobile, and it was much easier to stay overnight instead of facing Rex's persistent questions about why he always looks so tired and sick and why he always had so many "accidents" at work. "Okay. I understand." Rex says.
The walk was painfully silent, and Mystery was sure Rex could tell he was lying. They finally arrive in the alley, and Rex leads Mystery to the corner and sets him down. Rex curls up next to Mystery. The purple cat wraps his tail around his skinny body and looks up into the sky. The freezing rain didn't seem to bother Rex, but it chilled Mystery to the bone. Rex was warm at least, and he was happy he had a friend who was willing to care for him this much. Rex wraps his arms around Mystery, warming the freezing feline. Mystery hugs him back, bringing the smaller creature close to his body. The cat eventually lost track of reality as he shut his eyes and began to dream.
