*Hi there. I'm Cara Imaniqa. I'm turning thirteen this June. I have a Pomeranian named Maya, and she's probably the best thing in my life.

Well, that is, until Nathan came. Nathan Freyman was the HOTTEST, CUTEST, PERFECT-EST guy ever. Okay, maybe not ever, but, like, yeah. In my school. A star soccer player. Plays guitar and drums. Super-nice. Super-friendly. Funny. Loyal. Sweet. Rich. Smartass. PERFECT.

And you know what? He is three years older than me. And he has a girlfriend whom he has been dating for three years.

I know. Fuck my life, right?

Ok, gotta go now. Ew school.*

I put my new diary aside and slid off the bed. Get up, brush teeth, dress up. Same old routine. Sometimes I wished I was a unicorn.

Wait.

I am a unicorn.

"Caraaaaa!! Cara, hurry up! I'm gonna be late for school again, thanks SO much. Pisshead!" my brother, Cameron, shouted. I felt like bonking his head with a spatula. I groaned and rolled my eyes. I proceeded to embark on my journey down the stairs. I walked out my room...

And immediately tripped over an empty pizza box and fell nose-flat. Stay patient, I reminded myself. Conceal, don't feel. By the time I thumped down the staircase, Cameron was already at the door.

He snorted and gave me an up-and-down look. "I'm not exactly saying that you're 'thoughtful' fashion-wise, but I never knew you could be as lazy as that," he commented on my outfit; a pale pink hoodie and sky blue denim shorts, matched off with Converse high-tops.

I snorted back at him. "Look who's talking," I scoffed. "Hey, at least I wore Crocs instead of flip-flops!" he shot back. I shuddered. We got out of the house and into his Ford. We didn't live with our parents, you see. My dad works abroad and I don't even know my mom.

I sat silent through the whole journey. As we pulled up to Hale Middle School, Cameron leaned in and planted a kiss on my cheek. As annoying as he could be (we're talking very annoying), Cameron could also be really loving. I pretended to be disgusted anyway and pulled a face at him. "Well, see you after school," I said, stepping out of the car. "Bye, love you!" he shouted as I started walking to the schoolgates. "You forgot to feed me breakfast, dingbat!" I shouted back, then laughed at his facial reaction. I watched as he went off to Herondale High, where he studied.

I decided to rush off to the cafeteria without even stopping by my locker. I saw Abigail, my bestfriend, already waiting for me with our friends Hanna and Olivia. "Well if it isn't Princess Cara," Abbie greeted me as I plopped my butt on the seat next to her. "Wow, you are pretty early today. Very early, yes. You actually arrived ten minutes after I finished a plate of waffles and a whole packet of Oreos. Indeed, you are reaaally early this morning, Your Highness." Her voice oozed with sarcasm, which I totally ignored. "YOU ATE A WHOLE PACKET OF OREOS WITHOUT ME!?!?" I practically screamed.

Hanna choked on her caramel macchiato in attempt to stiffle a laugh while Olivia accidentally stabbed her finger while filing her nails. Abbie rolled her eyes and laughed.
