Chapter Five:
My stomach twisted and I turned away from the tree. I felt the gummy worms I ate earlier coming up to my throat. Then I let it out.
After, I turned confidently towards the scene and tears fell from my eyes.
Inside the tree trunk, Amber Burn. Her body was pale and dead.
It wasn’t just Amber Burn though; there was also, Johnny Garfield, and Tiana Right, a little girl who disappeared 4 years ago, only being 4.
So many children, stuffed into this tree trunk.
“He kept me here.” Amber croaked. “First he raped me, and then when he was done with me, he stuffed me in this smelly tree with other children who were alive, but some were dead. He left me there to die. And as the week passed 2 more kids were stuffed into the tree. It smells like urine and vomit and fear. I hated it Alanna. I couldn’t move or see because, as you see, he covered my eyes and tied my legs and arms together. It was the worst week of my short life.” She began to sob.
I ran over to her and hugged her.
“Amber, it’s okay. It’s okay.” I hugged her tightly but it couldn’t stop her from shaking and crying.
“Alanna, what am I going to do?” She looked at me with wet cheeks.
“You wait.” I said.
“Wait?” She questioned.
“Yes, for God to choose your fate.”
“That’s just it.” She laughed still crying. “I’ve sinned Alanna. As you know, I won’t be going to heaven. But I’m most definitely am not going to hell.”
I stared at her confused. What does she mean? She can’t stay here forever.
“Amber, I don’t understand…”
“I’m not going to hell. Do you understand now?”
I shook my head. Then she shook hers in disbelief, and then disappeared.
I walked home in the cold alone and kept my eyes on the ground .I usually do this when I’m thinking.
Finally I was back on the sidewalks again. I guess I should have been watching out.
“Whoa! I’m sorry are you okay?” A familiar voice said while the male lifted me from the ground. Then I realized the male.
“Gio? What are you doing out here so late?” I rubbed my head trying to ease my headache I felt coming on.
“I like to run at night.” He smiled and shrugged. “What are you doing?”
I thought about it, and then decided to show-and-tell the tree and Amber’s story.
Gio cried, and I began to cry as well.
“Alanna, we have to call someone.” He said through shivers.
“No, no, they’ll wonder why we are out here.”
“So what?” He said frowning, clearly angry now.
“So! What am I supposed to tell them? ‘Oh, Amber Burn’s ghost showed me.’” I frowned angry now too.
“So what then? You’re just going to leave these bodies here? What if the guy comes back?” He began to raise his voice. He was very upset.
“He won’t, he’s dead. Amber killed him!” I didn’t mean to say that. It just, slipped out.
“Killed him? A killing ghost? Great, just…” He hit the tree and turned from me. “FUCKING GREAT.” He ran his fingers through his hair then stuffed them in his hoodie and looked at me.
“Alanna…do you not see? You need to get her away from you. She’s dangerous.” He sighed.
“I know, but, how am I supposed to keep her away from me? And you know, I actually don’t think she’s dangerous. Do YOU not see? This guy deserved to die. In my eyes, I don’t see a problem.” And this was the truth. I didn’t see anything wrong. Amber is just scared, and I would want revenge too.
“Alanna, you’re smarter than this! Don’t be a fucking idiot!”
I frowned at him swearing at me like he’s my father.
I turned and stomped away, heading home.
“Wait, wait, I’m sorry. Alanna, I’m sorry. I am.” He ran in front of me blocking my trail. He closed his eyes then looked at me sadly. He placed his hands on my hips and said, “Listen, if you want to sit here, and trust a killer ghost, fine. But don’t expect me to just sit around and let you.”
I threw his hands off of me.
“You don’t know her Gio. You don’t know Amber.” I continued walking.
“Yeah, but I do know she’s killed someone, and she hates it when I touch you.”
“So she’s overprotective, who cares? She’s just trying to protect me. To keep what happened to her to happening to me.”
“So what? It’s okay for her to be protective and not me? I love you Alanna. Of course I want to be protective. And why you Alanna? You didn’t even know her. Out of all people why choose you? Don’t you find that strange at all? Obviously she has some purpose for you.”
“Hey!” Amber yelled. She appeared behind Gio.
Gio turned and backed away frightened.
“I’m tired of you. Trying to turn my friend against me, and trying to rape her? I don’t think so.” She hissed and next thing I saw, was Gio get ripped to pieces, and lots and lots of blood.
