~Chapter Eighteen

"I'm sorry, but the king is not accepting visitors at the moment," the royal guard apologizes, although he obviously isn't sorry. They're blocking the entrance to the castle, and Fera looks like she's !ikhvvcfpikabout to ram down the door, ,hot tears streaming down her face. Eve struggles to hold her back.

"That man that you killed," she spits, choking on her words, "he-was did nothing to you. Nothing! How could you take orders to kill a man and not bat an eye? You're monsters! All of you!" Fera gives up the fight, and Eve is able to pull her back. The guards just look bored. They probably deal with this stuff all the time.

"Look ma'am," the second guard says in a monotone voice, "We're truly sorry about your loss. The king sends you his condolences." They shoo us away without another word. When we're on the perimeter, Fera turns to the left and makes her way around the back.

"Eveline, we're initiating Plan W." Fera tells Eve through gritted teeth.

"Woah, woah, woah," Eve tries to keep up, leaving Cam and I out yet again. "We agreed that Plan W was a last resort."

"And this is an emergency." she gives Eve a murderous glare, challenging her to disagree. "Murdering Sawyer was the last straw. You know what a valuable asset he was. Trust me, I know the dangers of Plan W, especially considering what happened last time, but we have no choice. We're going to have to do it."

As we near the back and Fera is busy finding a certain spot on the back wall, Eve disregards her challenge and disagrees anyway. "But we don't have backup " she snaps back. "Besides, we can't do anything yet."

Fera throws her hands up and turns to Eve. "And why's that?" Secret messages seem to pass between them. At last, Fera shakes her head. "I'm sorry, Eveline. I know what the plan was, but none of us could have seen this coming. We have to improvise."

Cam seems to have had enough of being ignored . "Alright. Do you care to fill Hayden and I in on what exactly is going on? Because I am tired of you two always being so discrete and secretive, and just leaving us in the dust, and I know Hayden is too. So if you don't mind, can you please tell us what's going on!"

After a moment of shocked silence, probably because Cam has never risen his voice before, Fera shakes her head. "Not yet. But you'll find out soon enough." She turns to me. "Now you. I need you to bust a hole in this wall, in this spot." She points to the part of the wall that she had been examining.

"Are you crazy?" I say, "If I do that, the guards will come running. And then we'll really be screwed."

"Then do it quietly." she replies as if it's obvious.

"And how exactly am I supposed to do that?"

She rolls her eyes and taps her foot impatiently. "Look, girly, we don't have all day. Just do what you can, and we'll take care of the rest."

Not wasting any time out of fear that Fera might kill me, I make my way towards the wall. Most of the guard are around the front, but I have a nagging suspicion that some are in hiding, and they'll come for us as soon as I bust through this wall.

I rush over to the spot that she was pointing at. "Doesn't have to be too big," Fera tells me from behind, "Just big enough for a person to fit through." I place my hands on the wall, take a deep breath, and close my eyes. Just like last time, I can see everything in invert colors. I imagine a hole in the wall, and it appears, but I haven't made a hole in the physical wall yet. It's all in my head.

I imagine the hole being just big enough for a person to fit through. Then I create the hole, being as silently as I can, of course.

The bricks inside of the circle that I've made crumble away, grinding into dust. It isn't loud at all, but someone's bound to notice it sooner or later.

I open my eyes again and blink against the blinding summer sun. Fera and the others waste no time climbing through the hole.

As I enter last, I hear the shouts of the guards. Yeah, they noticed.

I quickly crawl through, brushing the dust off. "Close it!" Fera barks with wide eyes. I command the dust to fill the hole, and it obeys. The hole is filled so perfectly that it looks like nothing ever happened. I don't have time to marvel at the awesomeness of what I just did, the sound of forty footsteps charging towards us.

We start running down the hallway. It takes me a few moments to realize that we're in the same hallway that leads down to the cells.

We keep running down the narrow, twisting until I feel like I'm going to collapse before we reach the first door, the wooden one with the plank keeping it shut. The hot air doesn't make me sweat any less. To make matters even worse, there are two guards there to greet us. And they don't look happy.
