(This book is kinda bad but I haven't gotten around to rewriting it)
"Brother?"
"Hn"
"How come humans have souls but deer don't?"
The white tailed deer stood no more than 20 meters away, his ivory antlers stood proudly atop its head. It stared at us intently, ears twitching in the gentle breeze.
"Who said deer don't have souls?"
I responded my voice no lower than a whisper.
"Father"
I rolled my eyes.
"Fathers full of crap belle, you shouldn't listen to his nonsense."
"Father says that god created man to have a soul, and for animals to -"
"Screw father."
The deer blinked its beady black eyes in our direction.
I turned away from the animal to look at belle.
Her short black hair dripping droplets of water onto the dock.
"Listen, Fathers just crazy, he doesn't know what he's talking about."
She looked at me her hazel eyes as wide as saucers. I couldn't help but notice her resemblance to mother in that moment.
Her eyes then narrowed before she cast them down toward her feet.
"Mother and father would ground you for weeks if they heard you say that" she said twirling a strand of midnight hair between her fingers.
"They would ground you if they saw the state of your dress right now."
I smirked knowing I had the upper hand as I glanced down as her once pale yellow dress now torn and streaked with mud.
We were quiet after that, enjoying the sun on our backs.
The deer just blinked.
Animals don't have souls, huh.
