Friday afternoon
I'm sitting in English class just waiting for the bell to ring. Five more minutes and then I can finally confirm that my baby is a boy. My friends are pretty excited too. They also keeping saying it's going to be a girl. Every time they say it I just roll my eyes.
When the bell rings, I hurriedly sling my bookbag over my shoulder and I'm the first one out the door. I head to the front of the school because that's where Kai is picking me up. I spot his black 2014 Chevy truck the moment I walk out the door. I speed walk/run to his truck.
I'm so excited and I still have an hour and a half till my appointment. I hop in the car and I get the most handsome smile ever from Kai. I can see the excitement in his eyes.
He kisses me on the cheek, "Hey gorgeous. How was school?"
   "Better now that it's over."
"Are you hungry? I was thinking of stopping at Mary Ann's Diner, since your appointment is at 3:30."
"Oh, yeah! I'm starving!" He chuckles and takes a left at Orange Blossom Trail, heading to our favorite place.

Once we arrived at Mary Ann's, I knew exactly what I was going to get. I've been craving them for a while now and every time we get a jar of it, they're gone in a matter of days.
We sit down in our usual spot in the corner and my favorite waitress comes up to us. "Hey babydoll! How you been?" Rosie said.
"I'm doing good, Rosie. We're going to find out the sex of the baby today." I say this while grabbing my belly. I feel so overjoyed knowing we will know for sure it's a boy.
   "Aww! That's great baby!"
   "Thank you, Rosie."
"Now what do you two lovebirds want to eat?"
Kai speaks up and says, "I'd like your famous cheeseburger with a side of fries and a large Pepsi, please."
   "Now you babydoll."
"I would like three pickles with a large cherry Pepsi, please."
"What? That's all you're gonna eat?" Kai says with a confused look on his face.
"Baby, it's just her pregnancy cravings. It happens to every pregnant girl."
"Is that why all the pickles are gone in the house?" All I could do was laugh while my cheeks start to heat up. "Well if I would've known that, I would've gotten you a large jar of pickles when I was at the store today."
"I didn't think it was a regular thing to crave pickles so much and eat them all the time."
"Oh yeah girl. At least you're not one of them pregnant girls that eat pickles with peanut butter." Rosie says this with a shiver and I couldn't agree more. Since about 3 months ago, I couldn't stand the smell of peanut butter. It would make me so nauseous. "It'll be about 15 minutes for your food to be out here and I'll bring you your pickles out when I bring your drinks."
As she walks away, Kai leans forward and has the biggest smile on his face, "I can't wait for this appointment. I'm so excited. I can't wait to find out the gender! I really hope it's a boy!" My heart swells up three times it size, when I hear those words from his mouth.
I grab his big callused hands with my small dainty fingers and look him deep into his blue speckled eyes, "I love you so much, Kai."
"I love you too." He never breaks eye contact and continues to hold my hand. We sit there in a comfortable silence just looking at each other, trying to comprehend just how much we love the other. It's so scary to think that I love him this much.
I'm always afraid he'll wake up one day and not want me anymore or realize a baby is too much for him to handle and find a way out, or even find someone better.
I get pulled out of my thoughts when I smell the pickles under my nose and the clank from our drinks being placed on the table.
"Your food will be right out baby and if you need anything else you guys just holler for me." Rosie said.
   "Thanks."
                               •••
Once we got done eating we hurry to the appointment because we took longer to eat than usual. I feel my heart start to beat faster and my stomach starts to do flips, or was that the baby?
We get there just a few minutes before my appointment. We walk into the slightly chilly doctors office and sign in. Not even 5 minutes passed and we are getting called back.
I grab Kai's hand as we get closer to the room and my grip gets tight and sweaty. The nurse opens the door for us and starts asking the usual questions. I wanted to tell her to hurry up and get the doctor so I can tell my dad he was wrong the whole time.
The nurse walks out and Dr. Williams walks in seconds later. "How are my two favorite teens doing today?"
"Once I confirm my baby is a boy I'll be great!"
Dr. Williams chuckles, "Okay, the gel I'm going to put on your stomach will be a little cold."
He turns around to get the gel out of the drawer and I instantly attach my hand to Kai's arm. I don't know why, but having contact with him makes me feel better.
It feels as if ice was placed on my stomach when he squeezed the gel out. "Are you ready to find out what gender your baby is?"
All I could do was nod my head. He places the camera on my stomach and moves it around a couple of times, then I hear a strong and healthy heartbeat. "So have you bought anything for the baby's room?"
"No, we wanted to wait till we found out the gender."
"Well, I hope you don't mind the color pink."
"No, I don't mind the color pink. As long a-" I looked over at the doctor and see a huge smile on his face. "What did you say?"
"You're having a little baby girl."
"We are? Really?" I look over at Kai and I see tears in his eyes which makes me want to cry. "I guess we're not going to be able to name her Mark." He laughs through the tears.
"I'll give you guys a minute alone." Dr. Williams walks to the door and quickly slips out.
"We're going to have a girl," as Kai says this he looks at me and I can see how happy he is. He doesn't care if it's a boy or girl. He just wants a healthy baby.
"Dad is gonna have a field day with this. I'm going to have to say he was right." I look at Kai and see he's just staring at my belly.
My phone suddenly starts ringing and I look to see it's my mom. Why is she calling me? I press the green answer button and slowly put the phone up to my ear.
"Hello?" She never calls me. When she hangs up, I start breathing hard and I can't catch my breathe.
"What's wrong?" I can see the worried look on his face, but it took me a minute to answer.
"My dad is in the hospital."
