January 1944 ~
The past few months hadn't been the best. It started off fine closer to the cities, but Steve now realized that this was probably because he had never seen combat. The boys on the front certainly had, and even Elaine had more experience in such areas than he did, and she inspired the troops more than he had the ability to. Perhaps this contributed to his need to go after the 107th, with or without orders. Truth be told, as long as his best friend was in danger, he would have gone anyway. That was the only reason Elaine had agreed not to argue. The three would always be there for each other. They were with Bucky 'till the end of the line, and they weren't going to leave him now.
The general continued to tell them that Steve and men he had gone after were dead, but Elaine refused to believe it. Brooks and Peggy, both of whom had befriended Steve and Elaine, tried to get her to face the likely truth, but she simply didn't believe they were dead. She knew Bucky never gave up without a fight, and Steve just refused to give up in general. He always said he could "do this all day", and she wouldn't be surprised if that was now true. Elaine couldn't allow herself to do anything but hope and pray for her boys, asking God to bring them home safe. And one day, he did.
Elaine was sitting in her tent, nothing more to do for the day, when she heard cheering outside. Stepping into the open air, she made her way to where the troops had crowded, and saw a familiar blond standing in the middle, a group of bloodied men behind him. He saw her and grinned, walking up to his fiancee as she raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms.
"Hi, honey. I'm home." Elaine kept her stern and severe look, but he saw the amusement held in it, as well as the overwhelming relief that filled him with guilt.
"You're late." Steve laughed sheepishly, holding up his destroyed radio.
"Yeah, well, I couldn't call my ride." She laughed happily, her eyes tearing up as he pulled her close to kiss her before enveloping her in a much-needed hug.
"Alright, lovebirds. Break it up." The couple laughed at Bucky's teasing, and Elaine hugged him as well, though not without punching him twice in the arm for scaring the hell out of her. Her boys were back, safe and sound, and that was all that mattered.
