Daehyun sat at a table for two outside Skydive Cafe. The purple parasol doing little to blot out the sweltering heat and light from the summer sun. He suddenly felt very overdressed in his baggy orange jumper and ripped jeans. His palms were clammy but he realised that it was probably more due to his nerves than the fact it was 24°C.
He checked his phone clock again.
12:36
He was late.
But only by six minutes and Daehyun was usually the late one for everything so he wasn't going to be stingy about it.
As he was walking to the cafe, he'd sent his unknown bestie a quick message saying 'on my way, wish me luck 😜' but he couldn't be sure if it had sent properly since the signal was weak and his phone only had twelve percent left which he wanted to save for playing games later.
"Sorry I'm late, I couldn't find my phone."
Daehyun looked up to see Youngjae blushing and panting as he slid into the seat opposite and brushed his perfect hair out of his eyes.
He was wearing a simple button-up blue shirt, ripped skinny jeans and white sneakers.
Daehyun couldn't help but think that they must have similar fashion sense.
He also couldn't help but think that the younger looked absolutely adorable.
"Have you ordered yet?" Youngjae asked, relaxing into his seat and taking the menu Daehyun handed him.
"Not yet, I thought I should wait for you since it's your lunch."
"You didn't have to wait for me." He blushed again. "Anyway it's not my lunch. It's our lunch. Or just lunch because that made it sound too much like a date."
"Y'know, we could just call it a date and stop all of this confusion." Daehyun suggested.
Youngjae laughed and shook his head. "Definitely not."
Daehyun pouted, "Fine."
They spent five minutes deciding what Youngjae should have, before Daehyun called over a pretty waitress with a name tag saying Sana.
"What would you like to order?" She asked cheerily.
Daehyun recited their choices, having eaten the same thing at this café for years.
"Okay, is that all?" She waited for Daehyun's confirmative nod before continuing. "Your drinks will be with you in a few minutes."
Once she'd left, Youngjae turned to Daehyun.
"So, do you come here often? I didn't have you down as a pretty café kind of guy."
Daehyun laughed. "What can I say? I'm a man of mysteries. I used to come here a lot with Baekhyun and Yongguk when we were younger, Jinyoung's ex girlfriend's parents run the place. They're still really friendly with us."
"That's cute. Were you and Baekhyun always close then?"
Daehyun glanced at Youngjae inquisitively, wondering why he was so interested in Baekhyun.
The younger quickly answered his silent question. "I wasn't trying to pry or anything, you just sounded really happy talking about it and I assumed you were close as kids."
Dahyun nodded. "We were. Baekhyun, Yongguk and I were really close since we were four. We used to all be inseperable, but since high school started, things have gotten more complicated. There's Chanyeol, Yongguk's new friends, Taehyung and Sungoh... A lot of things have made us drift apart, but I still care about them both, even if they don't know that. I miss our old friendship but I understand that they've both moved on and made new relationships."
"And you don't think you have?"
"I don't know. I have a lot of friends, I guess. But none of us are as close as the three of us used to be. All we ever do together is play on the Xbox and believe it or not, I'd rather have more of a life than that. I'm not saying I don't appreciate them, but I don't really feel as though I have a best friend to rely on anymore. Yongguk's great and I know he tries to hang out with me whenever he can, but he's dating Himchan now and they go out together all the time."
"If you feel lonely you can hang out with me~!" Sang Youngjae pulling a cute face and laughing with Daehyun instantly afterwards.
"Thanks for that." Daehyun grinned. "And if Jongup and Zelo don't mind, I definitely will."
Youngjae smiled back, his cheeks turning red once again.
"You're so cute when you blush." Daehyun muttered quietly.
But not quiet enough for Youngjae not to hear.
