I lay on the forest floor doing nothing but feeling. Feeling everything, the soft dirt moving through my fingers and all around me. I stood to feel more, I felt the summer sun sink into my skin like hot water seeping through sand and I welcomed it, I loved it. I felt the velvety leaves of small leaves surrounding me.
I felt the cool water of the river wrap around my fingertips, I felt the light warm breeze wash over me like a wave. I felt good. Everything around me begging to be heard, begging me to listen. And so I did.
All I heard was everything. As I grew used to the range of sounds around me I started to pick out certain ones. First, I heard the sound of the wind moving through the leaves, it sounded like thousands of crumpled pieces of paper being dumped on the floor, and when the wind stopped all the papers were put back in a box waiting so eagerly to be dumped out yet again. Next I heard countless crickets all singing to each other in their own language. Though I had no idea what they could possibly be saying I felt like I somehow understood them. They were all saying "Open! Open your eyes and witness this beautiful day!"
And so I did.
The light was so bright I couldn't see for a few moments, as my pupils grew smaller and smaller I could see more and more. The first thing I noticed were the trees, of both bright and dark green. Then I noticed the flowers, they were all so different. Some stood up straight with streaks of light purple and pink flaring off a green stem, others dangled orange and red petals. I saw beauty everywhere I walked, from the beautiful trees and flowers to the large blank stones on the ground. The wind whipped against my face like a flag flying high, carefree. And suddenly I had a strange need to smell.
And so I did.
I breathed in through my nose and I could smell the water of the river below me, it smelled old, like an old chest you find in your grandfather's attic, full of stories and secrets people may never discover. The dirt smelled fresh, full of life, as if I could drop a penny and grow a tree of copper, as if I could drop anything and grow a new one. The wind hit my face once again making me want to open my mouth
And so I did.
I opened my mouth and the wind filled me with a familiar taste of something fresh and green. It was the taste air obtained when it flew through a tree, it tasted comfortable. The taste that made you think of home, and not the home where you live now but the home you grew up in. The home with so many good memories it overwhelmed you and all you could do was just sit, sit and think of all the perfect moments. Your first loves, your heartbreaks, those who picked you up and carried you through the heartbreaks like a wounded soldier in a war of emotions. But after those wounds healed you were once again out on the battlefield with your heart on the front lines.
