Aloe From The Other SideAlthough it sounded awfully tempting, calling Charlotte at 3am, disturbing her beauty sleep in the process, was not an option if I wanted my limbs to remain intact. So, as soon as the clock struck 9, her pre-entered number was dialled.
"No, I will not go on a date with you or sleep with you." Came her drowsy response.
My body shook with silent laughter. "That's too bad. I could have made it worth your while."
Pause. "Should have guessed that you'd be the only brave soul to wake me up at this time of the morning."
"I had the decency to wait 'til 9 instead of calling you at 3 like I'd initially planned to do."
A sigh came through from the other side. "Please don't tell me you called to rant about the astonishing prices of artificial chicken nuggets in today's society again. I need 10 cups of coffee before I can handle that type of torture."
I rolled my eyes. "It's about a boy."
I could literally hear Charlotte's whiplash through the phone. "Boy? Do you even know the meaning of the word?"
Another eye roll. "Yes and I happened to meet a very... interesting one last night."
I could make out the sounds of bed springs, presumably Charlotte getting comfortable to hear my scandalous encounter with a member of the opposite gender. "Now this I've got to hear."
I recalled the entire even in great detail, including the literal sticky situation I'd gotten myself into.
Charlotte's mouth must have dropped to the floor and I was sure her cheeks were as rosy as mine. "No way, Rose. I feel embarrassed just imagining being in your position. Who was this boy even? I need to know who to keep off both of our radars."
I had a feeling she would retract her last sentence in a heartbeat because he was, without a doubt, all over her radar since the conversation with my mother..
"Isaac Levi." The way my stomach fluttered made me want to rip it out and disintegrate it.
"No way! What a coincidence because I also met him the other day. Even got his number."
And there went my happy mood. The last thing I had expected to exit her mouth was an upstage of my menstruation mishap, not that it would take much to outdo my warped tales.
Forcing cheer into my voice was almost impossible but with practice came somewhat perfection. "Oh, really? That was quick. How did you guys meet?"
If delight was contagious I must be immune. "Yeah! He's joining our school on Monday, well tomorrow, and I offered to give him the grand tour."
A tour of just about anything including her mouth, I presume. I wanted to blame my pettiness on my lack of sleep but I knew better.
"Well aren't you a lucky girl." I felt as fake as the chicken nuggets I constantly complained about, yet still consumed.
"I know hey. Might make a quick stop by the janitor's closet, if you know what I mean." I was seconds away from puking and my hand itched to wipe the obnoxious smirk that surely donned her smug little face.
My relationship epiphany had turned into a nightmare and I'd never wanted a conversation to end sooner. "Definitely. Oh, I've got to go. My show's starting." A bald-faced lie but a girl's got to do what a girl's got to do.
"You and your series. See you."
I threw my phone onto my pillow beside me with an exasperated sigh.
"Screw that tour. That's probably all they're going to be doing, screwing. She'd like that." I groaned before my eyes caught sight of my phone.
Neither of us had ended the call.
