They took me to a new home. They gave me a new name.

I had a name before but I can't even remember it now. Silver is who I am. I don't remember anything about my life before the Capitol, only there must have been because they told me that later. It doesn't matter, anyway. If there's one thing that this Capitol has taught me, it's that the past doesn't matter, as long as you win in the end. And there's no doubt that I won.

'They' is a man and a woman. They must have names, but I never heard them. In my mind they have names. The man is Frown, because that's all he does. The woman is Yellow, because that's the colour of her hair. They might be a couple; I don't know. I don't care.

I don't care about anything.

Early on, I remember that Frown and Yellow took me to a room. They made me sit down in a chair. It wasn't very comfortable and my feet didn't touch the ground. The room was empty apart from a big screen, and there was big booming music playing on it. And they showed me a program. It was a good program, with no real story. Some children, big children, were stolen away from their homes. That was the first part. Some of them cried, which I liked. By then, Frown had already taught me to like crying. Some of them were happy. They spent a while getting dressed up and talking to people and boring stuff like that. And then the good stuff started. The kids were all put in a space - like a big cage, they told me - and they had to attack each other. And lots of them cried, and lots of them died in all sorts of awesome ways; my favourite was the girl who was tied to a tree and set on fire, because she cried well, and it was all good. I wanted to see another. So Frown let me see another. And then they took me to another room, a big room, and they had all the toys they'd had in the program, and they let me play with them and aim them at model people. I was good at this. They got people to come in and show me how to use the toys. It was fun because I was better than them. Sometimes, they got me dummies that looked properly realistic, and cried and bled and ran away just like the people on the program.

One day, they said, when I was old enough, I would be on that program, and I would be better than anyone who'd ever been on it before.

I was probably about ten when I heard the program called the Games for the first time. At that time I was living with Yellow; my home changed around a lot, though I always had the room with all the toys - now called weapons - and a room with a screen so I could watch the Games whenever I liked. A man came to see me, 'to check on the surprise'. He seemed happy. He was all big and growly, like a bear-mutt, and he tickled me under the chin and said I was cute. I didn't often get visitors and Frown had told me that strangers were bad and would only try to trick me or hurt me, but Yellow had told me the bear-mutt man was nice, and Yellow was always right.

"Perfect," he said to Yellow. Yellow had smirked and shown him through to the playroom and got me to play with the weapons. He had watched as I shot arrows into the head of a dummy, tore one to shreds with a knife, broke another's back. It was fun doing it for someone else, almost like the program. I was having so much fun that Yellow had to shout at least three times to get me to stop. "The Games will love her," the bear-mutt man had said.

"What's the Games?" I had asked, in my best threatening voice that I'd heard on the program a lot from the big kids. The bear-mutt man had frowned like he wasn't sure whether to be happy or scared.

"The Games is your favourite program," said Yellow, "Because it's like a game you play."

I'd never played a game before, understand that. All I'd done was play with the weapons, eat, watch the Games. It was the one thing I wanted to do, was to finally play rather than watching.

"When do I get to play?" I would ask, at least once a day.

"Not long now," Yellow or Frown would say. And that would make me happy.
