Finally, the day came. I sort of knew that it had been coming because Frown and Yellow had been smiling at me a lot, talking to each other in whispers, and I'd had a lot of visitors. All of them had been bright and colourful, like Yellow.

Yellow herself came into the room to wake me up. Usually she let me wake up on my own - I never liked to sleep for long anyway, taking short naps during the day instead - but that day she stormed in like a big firework.

I attacked her.

There was a reason for that, though over the years I'd learnt to attack without reason. That reason was that I didn't recognise her. Her hair was a different colour; silver, with little sparkly streaks in it. It was styled like mine too, straight down to her waist, even though it had been shorter before. She must have grown it almost overnight. Her outfit was one of the most bizarre that I had ever seen, and that was saying something. For a start, there wasn't much of it, little more than underwear with some ghostly material draped around her arms and legs that got tangled as I launched myself at her, snatching a necklace to strangle her with. Her shoes were almost transparent, and I could see her sparkling nail polish. There was a tattoo on her hip that I'd never noticed before, a picture of a kind of tiger-mutt. I prodded it, curious, and she sighed, relieved that I wasn't attacking her anymore.

"Silver," I said, happily. She was all silver. She beamed at me.

"Yes, honey. Silver. Isn't it beautiful? It's all in honour of your debut."

"I'm going to play the Games?!" I shrieked, jumping up and down.

"Yes, yes you are honey! But not yet. You're going to see your opponents. You're going to watch them talking to the woman, so that you know a bit about them."

I was silent for the moment. Yellow - now she wasn't yellow anymore - knew I didn't like the talking and dressing up.

"Do I have to dress up?" I asked, imagining the towering heels and dresses that trailed on the floor, useless for the Games but like I'd seen the opponents wear. It made me a little sick.

"No, honey. Nobody's going to see you. You'll be a big secret."

I liked the idea of being a secret. Of course, I'd been a secret for...well, I don't know. Probably about eight years. But this was the first time I'd been told this. It made me very excited. To keep me happy and calm, Yellow showed me a video of the Reaping; by now I'd learnt the name for the opponents being chosen, since I could now understand the words. She told me to pay a lot of attention because these were the people I'd be up against. So I took notes in my head.

Of course at first sight some of the people seemed useless. But I knew from my countless hours of watching the games, everyone is your enemy. They are all bad, even the ones that cried. I watched all the reapings, and made mental notes. One of the many things I was trained to do was to remember everything. I basically had a photographic memory.

"Play it again" I said, I managed to say this with no emotion. I'm concentrating, I need to remember everything.

"Sure" said Yellow

I watched the reapings about twelve times, maybe more, until I could play them again in my head, every name, every face, fresh in my mind. When the screen went black for the last time I still stared at the screen for ages. It was when I was thinking, planning things. I zoned out, properly as well. I wouldn't notice if I was hit by lightning. I lose all emotion, well more then usual. And my eyes go clear, misty clear. It was how I was trained, but I got better. So I'm ready for everyone in those games. Dead. Completely, no mercy. It was how I was brought up. Apart from the first couple of months here where all I did was cried, it was all I was told, until it was part of me, as ingrained as the knowledge that putting your hand in a fire will hurt. No mercy. And my whole reason for life was to win these games. So all I did was stare and thought about everything.

"I'm ready" I said eventually. Yellow was still in the room; she always watched me think.

"Well unfortunately Silver, you still have to wait. You'll get to see them talking this evening. Today you need to train very hard."

"So I'm still a secret?" I asked.

"Yes, you will be a secret for a few more days, but soon you will be the best." She sounded confident and proud. Yellow always did.

"Of course, failing is not an option," I replied. She liked it when I said things like this, things that she'd told me. I think she liked hearing her own words said back to her.

"Good girl," she said, ruffling my hair like she did whenever I did something well. With that, she turned on her heels and stalked out of the room, her newly sparkling hair waving behind her.

I laid back on my bed, replaying the reapings in my head. I had my strategy planned for ages and it only needed a few tweaks. Show no mercy, and do what can to survive. And with this lot, my job was easy...
