It all started on the beach. I was watching the seaweed float on the surface of the sea. I always looked forward to the hours that I could spend on the beach, watching the waves wash back and forth along the beautiful coastline. The beach has always been a very peaceful place for me. Every morning before surfing I sit on the edge of the cliff face and stare, sometimes I see a school of fish pass by... if I'm early enough.

Tomorrow I'm going with my mum to visit my dad in the city. I'm pretty scared because I'm not like them, the city people I mean. We'll see. But I am excited about seeing dad. I haven't seen him since summer 3 years ago.

So here I go. I'm terrified but excited at the same time. I've just finished packing and hopping in the car. There is horrendous traffic getting there, which is really unusual for us, and it seems like hours until we finally pull up to the house. I wave goodbye to my mum, she's off to some appointment or other, apparently it's not that important. I'm about to knock, but I hesitate. I'm so nervous. What if he's changed? What if he has more kids that he loves more than me? I finally knock on the door and hear it echo throughout the house. But something feels strange. I look around for a while whilst I'm waiting for the door to open. The house is so large and grand, the pillars that frame the doorway look regal and tower above me, giving me the feeling that they are trying to crush me. It's less of a house actually, and more of a mansion. The house is built of tawny shimmering bricks that give the impression that the house is made of solid gold. Nobody opens the door and I start to worry. What if he isn't home? I knock one more time before trying the door. It's unlocked.

When I walked in, it was not as I expected. It was completely destroyed. Tables flipped on their side, lamps had fallen over and antique vases smashed all over the ground. I couldn't see my dad. My heart was beating so fast that I wondered if everyone else in the house could hear it. I considered going back out and telling mum. But I stopped in my tracks. She had already left. I panicked.

I took a deep breath and yelled, "Dad! Dad!", but the house remained completely silent. Not a noise could be heard but my voice, then an explosion cracked through the air. BANG!  I heard a scream and started to run up the stairs, toward the commotion, and the destruction just got worse. His Egyptian-cotton bedcover and pillows were ripped to shreds and blood was splattered all over them. As I reached the top of the stairs I heard another scream, this time coming from a woman. A lady ran out of one of the rooms, bleeding in so many places I couldn't count. I could tell that she had been stabbed multiple times. The woman staggered and fell to the ground. It was then that she noticed me. I was standing in the middle of the room, unsure of what to do until she looked at me with those frantic eyes and whispered in a hoarse voice, "...run...".

I began to sprint back down the stairs, only turning to look behind me once, and saw with a shock that she had died, blood pooling on the ground. I also noticed a man in black jump out of the back window. I ran out of the house, not even pausing to shut the door behind me. I ran out onto the main road without looking where I was going. The last thing I heard was a loud car honking before I blacked out.
