Baneful

CHAPTER 1

I WAKE to the smell of eggs and bacon. 

   I get up and put on a t-shirt and shorts and quickly prance to the bathroom. I look in the mirror and brush my long dark-brown hair, brush my teeth, and apply moisturizer to my tan skin. I walk into the kitchen and find that my dad made eggs and bacon. My mom, Yvette, and sister, Eliza, are sitting at our gold wooden kitchen table eating away. As usual my parents are talking about the city and council related stuff. My dad, Allen, works for the city and is apart of the city council. Lately my parents have been talking about the council and what the Mayor, Marianna, has been doing to make the school system more fluent and organized. My parents and most of the town disagree with her plans to make the school more exempt. In the end she always wins because the council always votes for her plans. The mayor has her ways to bribe the council into getting what she wants. She always has a way.

  The reason why the town disagrees with her ways are because her ways never work and the plans she makes are senseless and irrelevant. Anyway my dad, who has dark brown hair and is quite the tall man is sitting down with my red headed mom who could pass for a white folk, but is really Mexican. They sit down and talk about how Marianna is planning to build a new scoreboard for the school, when our score board is perfectly fine. "It's ridiculous how Marianna wants to build things that are not useful and are a waste of money" my dad tells my mom. "I dont know how she keeps getting what she wants, the rest of the council is with her somehow" my mom says. I grab a plate of eggs and bacon and sit next to my sister and tune into what my parents are saying. "She bribes them with things they like, thats how she gets them to vote her plans in, but I'm not blind to her plans like them, Im her only threat, I'm the only one who sees through her" my dad says. My mom shakes her head "Yes and soon you need to make your move, you need to run for Mayor of Morrow and end her plans"  she says. I speak up with curiosity "Mom, what exactly are her plans?" I ask. 

  "Her plans aren't just about changing the school's system to a dull system, its more than that." she tells me. I think what can be more than that? Then I ask her "What exactly is she trying to accomplish here?" My mom looks at me then my sister and says "She doesn't like the people who oppose her and she will do whatever she can do to take down the people who defy her as Mayor and her plans" she tells me and my sister. I knew when she said "the people who oppose her" she ment my family of course. "So basically she wants to take us down? Since we oppose her?" I ask my mom. "Yes, your father is trying to run for Mayor and take her down before she takes us down and we know he has a really good chance of winning the votes to get Mayor, but he can't run for Mayor until next year when Marianna's term is over." my mom says with a concerned face. "Why the look on the face mom? Whats wrong?" I ask her. I know somethings wrong when she has that face that I know all to well, which means somethings wrong.

  "We don't know what she can do to us before elections are next year, we don't know what she will try to do to take us down, we're scared." my mom says with a look of horror. My dad speaks up "Marianna has a lot of powers as Mayor, she can do what she wants basically and get away with it because the council is so far up her butt." he says. "So what does that mean for us?" I say nervously. "It means she can tap into the school system and try to destroy you and Eliza's grades at school and do whatever it takes to make me not run for Mayor." my dad tells us. "So she has the power to take our future away from us then?" my sister says with a scared look on her tanish brown face. "Yes, she has the power to even take me off the council or terminate your moms job at the school, she can tear this family apart." my dad tells us looking away from our faces, scared of what our reactions are. "But of course honey we would never let her touch the both of you, we would do everything we can to protect the both of you and your futures." She tells us with a reassuring face. I was about to speak, but my dad spoke instead "You two better go to school, it's almost time for it to start" he informs us. We oblige and get up and go off to school. I jump in my sisters car with her and she gets in and we drive off to school. 

  On the way to school my sister and I sit in silence, but sooner or later I know she would break the silence. A minute or two later she breaks the silence and says "Do you think Marianna will win?" she asks me. Win? Is this a game? A game of who losses everything? I tell her "I don't know Eliza, maybe, maybe not, we have the potential to take her down". "Dads a threat to her and when someones a threat to someone they want to get rid of the threat and the threats resources" I say. "Resources? As in?" She asks me. "Us, we are the resources of dad, if she attacks us then dad has to lose, we are what dad loves the most and if she tries to take us down then thats what will affect dad the most" I tell her. "So we are dads weak points basically?" she asks me. "Yes, if she threatens to take us down, then of course dad will do whatever it takes to protect us, and then it's game over for us" I reply to her. We arrive at the school and get off the car. As we walk to the front of the school I see a woman perched in front of the doors of the school with a couple of council members, I recognize her instantly, she's the one who I fear, shes the one who can take us down, shes the one who can tear us apart, shes the threat, the woman turns around and looks in our direction, I look into her face, Marianna's face.
