I was the only one here, right? In all my time in this store I heard not one thing, not a single breath, footstep or whisper. So why was it I heard something fall over? Was it some kind of ghost? Wait, wait, wait. Don't let those thoughts take over otherwise you'll be afraid of everything and anything for the rest of your life! I just have to think, what could it be? Out of the one month and a half I've been alone, I haven't heard, or seen, a single thing alive. The only logical conclusion is that I was here at a bad time and that whatever fell was simply out of its place. But something was scratching the back of my mind, wanting to know if someone was truly here. So, I got all the courage I could muster and began walking on to where I heard the sound.
It sounded like it came from the Deli. Meats and Breads. All of that would've gone bad by now, so what...? Well, whatever it was, I needed to find out.
I was in the area of whatever fell. I tried my best to look around, the dimness of the light didn't make this any better. Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I saw something scurrying to the back room of the Deli. I felt cold sweat trail down my back at this point. Something was here, something alive. I wasn't sure whether to be happy or afraid, but considering the situation I think it'd be more right to feel afraid more than anything else.
I slid my hand down my right sweater pocket and pulled out a small switch blade, pulling it out and pointing it hesitantly towards where the something scurried off. "H-Hello?!" I yelled out in a shaky, unsure voice. Nothing responded, but I was absolutely certain that there was something else skulking around here. "Come out! Or...I'll be forced to use this against you!" I shouted once again. But as I expected, there was no response. My curiosity got the best of me as I realized I was beginning to trot to the aisle the whatever wandered off to. Once I turned the corner an inky black figure scurried off again, knocking over a couple loafs of bread. "Who are you!?" I tried asking, my voice echoed throughout the entire store.
I quickly made my way to the other side of the aisle, turning quickly and looking down the aisle. "G-Get away!!" Something yelled back, it sounded human, at least. But I wasn't sure if this voice was a sane person or if this person gone feral. Despite this, a shiver went up my spine, dropping my blade onto the ground and stepping back. "W-What...What are you?!" I tried asking again, but this thing just kept crawling away, whoever this person was.
Once I heard nothing again, I picked up the blade and looked around my surroundings. Currently, there was three aisles in front of me, some belonging to sweets and treats, another to breads and the last was filled with medicine. To my left there was a few kiosks belonging only to pies and cakes, but they had all gone bad at this point. Even if it was somewhat good I'd be too afraid to eat it. Food Poisoning. Quickly, I pulled myself together and began dashing off where I last heard this person's odd footsteps.
I dashed down the aisles, looking to my right with each aisle I passed by, until suddenly in aisle 7 I saw this person reach out to a bag of something I couldn't make out. When this person saw me, it grabbed the bag quickly and tried making its way to the doors. I couldn't let it get away, I followed it as best as I could and once it was out it immediately turned left. I followed suit rather quickly but once I was out, I tried scanning the area only to find nothing.
~ ~ ~
Weird. There wasn't anywhere to hide if I looked to my left, and he definitely didn't turn right. I was dumbfounded at how this person was able to get away so quickly. And who was he? Was he in the same situation as I was? Did he already lose his mind? There were too many questions for me to want to answer, so instead of trying to come up with an answer immediately, I gave up and let free a sigh. Looking to my right of the dead street.
I stood in front of the door to my house, looking around my area once again to make sure that thing didn't follow me home. "Okay." I sighed once I figured it was safe. I inserted the key into the slot and turned it, the clicking noise of the door unlocking gave me a sense of relief. I pulled open the door and pulled the key out, stepping in and closing the door behind me, locking it again.
The lights turned on by a flick of the switch, looking around the empty living room, seeing the large flat-screen TV hung on the wall, off. I stepped forward and gently let my bag to the ground, exhaling heavily as if to relax myself. Making my way to my room I threw myself onto the bed, staring at the ceiling above with a hint of gloom in my eyes.
There was a lot of mystery as to why I was left alone in some ghost town, once busy in one instant, gone the next. Everything wouldn't be so bad if I had someone to talk to, that person I saw at the market would've been my best bet, but he disappeared someplace else. Was he just a figment of my imagination? What if there really wasn't a person there? I couldn't figure it out, nor could I accept that it really was some spirit. That gave me the creeps. I shrugged off that feeling and sat up, looking at my computer which was turned off. I could access the internet and ask online about this. But last time I tried the thread was taken down in near nanoseconds.
It happened in every thread I had access to. It was like some virus eating away at every attempt I made to solve this mystery. The odd thing though is that if I tried to do anything else outside of solving it, the internet would work just fine. No deletion of my questions, no instant shut-off and no lagging. All the video players, websites and social outlets worked just fine, it was only when I tried to ask about the strange happening is when everything would mess up.
What was going on?
I couldn't answer that question, even if I tried my hardest. Something was happening, I just wasn't sure what.
