Anubis's POV

I sat on my bed quietly and watched the clock tiredly. The red numbers glowed in the dark, showing the time. It was too early for me to be up, but I had been having a restless night anyways. I sat up in bed and rubbed my side silently. I got up and looked at my bare room, wondering if I should start unpacking today. I decided against it and walked over to my boxes of clothes. I quietly got dressed into a black long sleeve shirt, blue jeans, and a green trench coat. I slipped on my black shoes and walked into the bathroom.

I put toothpaste on my toothbrush and looked at myself in the mirror. I was horribly pale, which wasn't fun to have since the sun was not very kind to my skin. My cheeks always looked pink or red like they had been pinched many times. This time they were a very soft pink, probably since I hadn't been exposed to the heat today. My long black hair was quite messy, and I didn't feel like doing it. I started to brush my teeth, looking down at the white sink and watching the water drain down the faucet. I let my mind wander slightly as I brushed.

I thought of my ex. How much I longed to just be close to him, to be in bed with him, anything... It made tears well up in my blue eyes. I forced myself to hold back my tears, not think of the man I loved, and think about my job instead. Oh god, no not my job either... I barely started working and I already had a terrible experience that made me want to puke.

I did comply with it though. So it was my fault, no doubt about that. I continued to think that over and over and spat out the toothpaste and washed my mouth out with water. Leaning against the sink, I bit down on my lip and thought about how this whole situation was like a terrible nightmare that I couldn't wake up from. I didn't really have anyone I could talk to about everything in my life. I was starting over in this town, no friends, no family, nothing. Just the things I had, which consisted of some clothes, my violin, books, a journal, and some money. I fiddled with the ring on my finger and turned the water faucet off, then walked to my room.

I picked up my messenger bag and got my keys, then left my empty home. I locked the door behind me, then started to walk around. People were up and early, doing chores, their jobs, or getting things from stores. I walked to the grocery store in silence, trying to ignore the stares I got from other people. I got a cart and pushed it while I trudged to the produce section.

I looked over the vegetables and grabbed a few, deciding on what to make during the week. While I did that, I felt as though someone was watching me from afar. I turned slightly and noticed a certain man that I had recently met. He wore a flannel over a t-shirt and jeans, whichI did find funny since he was my boss.He gave me a curt nod, which was a signal for me to walk over to him.

I did and looked at him quietly. He gave me a fake smile and looked over to the lady next to him. She was very pretty, curly brown hair, tan skin, the figure of a model. She wore a pale green dress and heels to match. She gave me a small smile, then looked at my boss.

"Lydia, this is my assistant, Anubis. She just started working for me." My boss said, motioning to me. Lydia nodded, then proceeded to look at me, probably relieved her husband had an assistant that wasn't as pretty as she.

"Hi Anubis. It's good to meet you, I'm James's wife." She said proudly.

I got what she meant. It was easy to tell she didn't approve of me. But I didn't really care, like I'd want her husband.

"Nice to meet you too ma'am." I said simply and started to leave.

"Wait Anubis, I need you to go check out some things around town. Stop by the office and I'll give you some things to do." He said to me, putting his hand on my shoulder. I shrugged his hand away, then nodded.

"Of course sir." I couldn't refuse him. I was his assistant, his Consigliere. I guessed he wanted me to gather information about someone else. Other people in the town would know me as an Investigator, snooping around and finding out a hint of what someone's role was, when really I was the corrupt investigator, able to figure out anyone's role.

I turned away from the Godfather and his wife, then walked to go find the rest of the groceries I needed. I really just needed to sit down and clear my thoughts. I don't think that'd happen anytime soon though.
