Tetsu had a terrible headache on this particular morning. He rubbed his forehead as he checked the display on his bedside digital clock.
His head was really banging, but he shrugged it off.
Must be a lack of iron or something, he muttered to no-one in particular.
The morning was young and that meant he could get an impromptu workout in before he had to leave the house. Just because the summer vacation was nigh upon him, that didn't give him any reason to stop working. He reckoned Ejirou was doing the same, but probably more since he declined to offer to go to the beach that afternoon.
Tetsu thought it was a bit off since they were planning it during spring and then Ejirou bailed. Now it was just him and _______, a close friend he and Ejirou met in the city when they went to buy video games. Rows upon rows of people were queueing and she was the only girl. He didn't know why, but that day, he gave his copy of the game to her. The way she smiled at him that time was still stuck in his mind.
He juggled this thought as he went for his 100th push up, the sweat trickling down the length of his neck. He had learnt to harden his body in separate areas to make his exercise weighted, giving him the opportunity to do resistance training in his room. Plus, gym memberships were hefty in the summer season.
After getting a good sweat, he grabbed a towel and went for a brisk shower. He had grown accustomed to cold water to loosen his muscles and cool them down much quicker. He only just remembered that his fridge was nearly empty and he just had enough spinach for a green super smoothie.
He stepped out of the bathroom, roughly drying his hair, scrubbing into the beads of water that managed to drip from the ends of each strand.
The soles of his feet were cool and relaxed against the surface of his living room floor; he walked across to his kitchen, flinging open the fridge and gathering what he had left for breakfast. He opened the blender top and took a bunch of spinach in his fist, then some kale and some soy milk. A couple of slices of banana, and some honey balanced the flavour, so he blitzed the whole thing and drank it straight out of the blending container.
His cellphone was buzzing in the bathroom. Tetsu chugged down the remainder of his smoothie, wiping the corner of his mouth and rushing to answer it.
The name on the screen read '_______' , to which Tetsu found himself smirking a little.
"Hey Tetsu, open your door. I'm outside."
"You can just use the spare key; you know I even gave Ejirou one."
"You pulled off the door handle last week, didn't you? No new locks Tetsu?"
Tetsu ruffled his own hair, feeling a little sheepish and abashed.
"Yeah, yeah. I'm coming."
Tetsu opened the door to the sight of his good friend wearing something he wasn't very accustomed to; a dress. He looked down at her, then up again, and being the honest guy he was, couldn't help but drop his jaw in amazement. _______ looked good, not really like his friend at all. Tetsu gulped a little, _______was smiling and didn't seem to notice his adverse reaction. He stepped aside and she invited herself in, putting down a bag near Tetsu's tiny coffee table.
She had her backpack with her, and opened it up to make sure she had everything she needed. _______ turned to look at Tetsu, who was scratching his head, looking a little befuddled and lost in his own home.
"I reckon you haven't been shopping or to the launderette yet?"
She chucked a clean towel his way and took out a clear container with some breakfast items inside.
"I was in a sweet kinda mood this morning so I just grabbed some homemade protein pancakes and berry muffins for you. Is that alright?"
Tetsu cleared his throat, trying his level best to sound normal.
"Sure. Um, thanks _______. You baby me too much sometimes."
He tried to act serious but a soft smile escaped his lips before he could help himself.
_______ had come around two days ago to hand wash him some clothes; they were still outside, drying on the balcony. That gave him an excuse to go out there and make an emergency call to Ejirou.
Tetsu dialled it and prayed he would pick up as _______went to busy herself in his snug kitchen, rummaging for dinnerware and cutlery.
Just as Tetsu was about to give up, Ejirou picked up before the last ring.
"Yo Ejirou, thank God you picked up man!"
"Yeah, sure Tetsu. What's up bro?"
"I don't think either of us are ready for what I'm about to tell you.."
