Kai tried hard not to spend too much time with the girl, but something always drew him back to her. Maybe it was her amazingly good talent at showing up everytime he was on the edge of doom, and her ability to convince him to spend time together, eventhough Kai knew Evelyn's best friend thought he was odd. Evelyn couldn't have cared less, tho — so whenever Kai tried to cut himself loose from her; when he tried to distance himself in order to get back to being an outcast; she wouldn't let him.

Because when she looked at him, she didn't see him as a monster, or a reject.

Unlike everybody else, she looked at Kai Parker without any prejudices; without trying to make him fit her idea of normal; of good. She believed there was good inside of him, that he was good throughout, beyond the surface. Now, if you think she wanted to change Kai, oh no. That was never her intention. She admired all his imperfections, though she had none —
good girl gone bad, is what you would say. But she never went bad.

Kai was unable to deny she was the golden girl, so golden that around her he was a whole different person — unintentionally. Evelyn was always smiling, she was shining, and sometimes it got to the point where a slight smile would cross Kai's face simply by watching her live her life so carelessly.

She would take him to the mall, not to shop but to watch others and to imagine people's dialogues from afar. She would force him to pose with an umbrella in the pouring rain so that she could take a picture of him with the brand new camera she bought from her savings. She would randomly ask Kai about his favorite color, and come up with a knotted friendship bracelet the next day that was half black, half blue, because apparently she ran out of black and hoped he would not mind — she told him she used the darkest shade of blue she could find.

He would not live in his imaginary world any longer — in the world inside of his head that was terribly horrific — for the first time in his life he had eyes for what was in front of him. He no longer felt left behind, or as if every step he took was wrong, and when he was near Evelyn or even thinking of her, he finally would stop caring about his family; about Jo and their parents praising her for just recently being elected head girl.  It almost seemed as if the more he stopped to care about his family, the more they would leave him alone: they would no longer bother checking in on him when he locked himself up in his room for hours.

He slowly stopped feel lonely, even when Eve was no where near him.
He began drawing more positive things. He began smiling went he felt sunrays shining against his face eventhough he hated summer and the heat.  He even began blushing when he was taking a look at her face when she was dancing through a field of corn with the brightest smile on her face.

For now, he did not bother.

He did not fight that his friendship with Eve was becoming the main aspect of his life. That it was that one thing to keep fighting for; the thing to let go for and the thing to push aside his family, the coven, and everything that had done nothing but call him an abomination. He felt free — and that was something no one could take from him.

For now. For now.

That was when Kai Parker realized  his Evelyn Morgan was different.
