Jane's P.O.V
"Hey Jane, you in there?" Caroline asked, waving a hand in front of my face. I blinked a few times, coming back from my blissful daydreaming.
"Oh, sorry," I said smiling sheepishly, pulling my dark brown bangs back from my face. "I was just thinking about some stuff."
"Ohhh what kind of stuff?" she asked, wiggling her eyebrows at me. She even had that smirk on her face.
I put my hand over my chest and pulled a face, faking offense.
"Very important stuff. Stuff I can't share with anyone else." I stated defensively.
She simply stared at me with a blank face before pulling my phone out of my hands. Before I could even protest, she was already scrolling through the books I had downloaded there.
"Ooohhh, this one looks steamy," she said, an evil glint in her eyes and the smirk back on her face.
"Give me that!" I said, snatching it back from her. I felt my face heat up so fast I was sure I looked like a fuming strawberry.
"Anyways..." I said trying to change the subject, "do you have everything prepared for next week?"
She rolled her eyes with a dramatic sigh and fell back on my bed. "Ugh, no. Why do you even remind me? I had so much fun this summer, I don't want to go back! " she whined.
I looked at her the same way she looked at the teachers at school, with boredom. Even after 9 years of knowing Caroline, she somehow still hated going back to school. Now I'll admit, there was a point in my life where I also despised going to that prison they call school, but I got over it. Caroline on the other hand, will do whatever it takes to stay home. That girl has ditched more times than I've read books. And I've basically read the whole public library.
To put it into perspective, Caroline and I may be best friends, but we are the complete opposite when it comes to personality. She looks and acts like a perfect angel when you meet her, with her long blonde hair and fair skin. She's always the center of attention at school. Everyone loves Caroline.
I, on the other hand, prefer to stay in the background. I'm not emo or goth or anything, but I like to wear dark clothes, dark makeup on weekends and my ears may or may not be lined with one too many piercings.
I think I look pretty average. I have a light complexion with contrasting dark brown hair and brown eyes. Caroline comes from an all American family, with her blue eyes and tall stature, there could not have been a more opposite pair of people on the planet. But here we are.
"HEY! Let's go shopping! We can go into town to pick up some cute outfits so we can look decent for prison next week!"she said, a lot happier than she was a few seconds ago.
"Fine." I said, digging in my drawer for my wallet with a sigh. "If it makes you happy."
"Yay!"
We walked downstairs and outside to her red Honda civic. After waving a quick goodbye to my parents watering the lawn outside, we made our way to the shopping district of our little town.
