- And all the kids cried out, "Please stop, you're scaring me" -

There was an awkward silence in the room. So many things had just happened at once; I woke up with a hazy memory of what happened, then Max's soft lips were just millimetres away from mine, but he pulled away as Zoe had walked into the room. Not that she stayed long, as Max had snapped for reasons I was unaware of. If I'm honest, I felt sympathetic for Zoe. Not that I would say that to Max.

He sighed and walked back over to me.
"Sorry for her rude interruption," he said, a note of irritation still in his tone from earlier. He attempted to mask his annoyance with a smile. "Where were we?"

I held back my blush and sat up. I stared at him.
"I think you were about to explain to me what the hell is going on?" I said, more harshly than I had intended to.
He flinched, as if he'd been hit. His eyes bored into mine and I could see the hurt, concern, and guilt in his expression.
"Don't you remember?"
"Not as 'crystal clear' as I would prefer," I replied.
He frowned and sat on the side of the bed. He hesitated for a moment then sighed.
"I... I-I felt bad for yelling at you earlier so I... tried to find you so I could... apologise..." I noticed that he was speaking a lot slower than normal and he hesitated in between some of his sentences. "I heard you go into the kitchen and I... well... y-you passed out and... I had no idea what happened! I shouted you to wake up but you weren't moving and then... t-then I saw the pills and I-I knew that Z-Zoe had given them to you s-so I... I-I..." He tailed off as his anxious tone turned into a sob. My eyes widened as I saw tears welling up in his eyes. I instantly sat up on my knees and cuffed his cheeks, wiping his tears away with my thumbs. I gave him a warm, comforting smile.
"It's ok, Max... I-I'm fine now... and you don't have to... to apologise for earlier... that was my bad," I encouraged, reassuringly.
He sniffed and cracked a smile as his tears began to dry into his smooth skin.
"It's good to know you're alright... seeing you in that state... I felt... scared..."
My smile expanded slightly. We sat there gazing intently at each other in silence, hesitantly inching closer from time to time.

After a few minutes, the moment grew awkward and he stood up.
"It's not hard to tell you're loving those clothes but uh, I'm sure you'd prefer if we got you some of your own" he grinned and held my hand, forcing me onto my feet. "Come on, the car's out front!" He sprinted down the stairs, dragging me behind him.
"You have a car?!" I breathed. He laughed and moments later, I was in the passenger seat of his matte grey car, the engine roaring to life as we sped off, away from orphanage.

We pulled up in the car park outside a store I didn't recognise. I opened the side door and stepped out the car, slamming the door behind me.
"This store is full of edgy shit so it should be right up your alley," Max said with a grin as he locked his car.
I flushed and rolled my eyes, feeling slightly intimidated by his sexy smirk that sent a shiver down my spine.
He chuckled, clearly seeing through my forced irritation and grabbed my wrist.
"C'mon Vee!" He rushed inside, once again, dragging me with him. I felt a warm feeling fill up inside me. People called me 'Vee' all the time... so why was it different with him? Why did it mean so much more to me?
I was immediately pulled out of my thoughts when the countless rails of gothic clothing caught my eye. I pulled away from Max's grasp and ran towards the section filled with plain black clothing. My eyes shined as I examined some items of clothing that caught my eye. Max appeared behind me and put a beanie on my head. I turned around to face him, lifting the beanie up from my eyes. I began to giggle and grin like a complete idiot. Realising, I shut up and blushed slightly, assuming he would do something to intimidate me further. But he didn't. Instead he blushed too and smiled a little. He mumbled something under his breath that I couldn't catch and took the beanie off my head.
"You buying this?" He asked, smirking slightly.
I giggled and placed the beanie on top of the pile of clothes I was carrying over my left arm.
"Along with all of these? 100%" I grinned and passed the clothes to him.
He smiled and held the clothes up.
"I'll take care of these," he said, rather proudly, "Don't worry 'bout paying me back, take this as a... a sort of gift" He winked at me and walked towards the counter. I felt my face burning and I followed him. Why did he keep causing this strange feeling to build up inside me?

We strolled out of the store, Max carrying a black bag with the logo of the store on the front of it. I'd said that I would be fine with carrying it to the car but Max insisted on doing it himself.
We got into the car and sank back into our seats. Max placed the bag on the empty backseats. He looked at me and slowly took off his seat belt. He started to gaze at me... but something was different about how he was acting... was that drool on his lips?
He crawled closer to me. He unbuckled my seat belt and I felt his hand reach over and rub the top of my left thigh.
My breath caught in my throat and I felt myself beginning to sweat. He got even closer to me and breathed against my neck. I felt his hands starting to rub against my body. I also felt his hesitation, mixed with the urge to touch me more.
"M-Max?!" I gasped.
He got closer to my ear and I heard his usual, calm breathing turning into a slight pant.
"V-Vee... I-I can't hold myself a-any longer... I... I lo-" Max's sentence was cut off by the sound of something breaking.

Max's POV

I turned around to look at what made the sound, my heat decreasing and my panic rising. There was a large crack on the windscreen, a small hole dividing the large cracks around it.
"What the-" My sentence was cut off once again, this time by the horror filling my eyes as I looked at Violet. She had a hole in her now blood stained shirt in the centre of her chest. I noticed something shining in the light of the sun in her wound.
A bullet.
I swore under my breath and trembled. Violet's eyes were shut and she was barely breathing. I climbed off her quickly and put her seat belt back on. I wanted to say something... tell her to wake up... say everything was going to be fine... but I was too scared to know for sure if the was true.
I revved up the engine and sped out of the parking lot. I was going just over the speed limit but right now I didn't care. All I cared about was Violet being okay.
Violet. The girl with the blue hair.
The girl with the curious mind.
The girl who had my heart chained to her without her even realising herself.
I parked the car outside the hospital and jumped out of it. I raced over to Violet's door and held her up bridal style out of her seat. Slamming the door behind us, I ran into the hospital with her body in my arms.
"Help!" I yelled at the top of my lungs, tears now filling my eyes. "She's been shot!! Somebody help her please!"

- I can't help this awful energy -
