To give a face and a voice to Marissa Jones... Zooey Deschanel

Marissa's POV

Two months ago my father died instantly in a head on collision with a MAC truck. Staying in the house filled with floating memories of the only other person my mother and I trusted, was just too much. We packed our bags, put the house on the market, and hit the road. I know people are thinking why we decided to up a leave after only two months, but we're going to be around familiar faces. Mom believes this is necessary for dealing with loss.
She has a longtime friend in Blue Gold, California. We usually vacationed there on winter break, to get away from the harsh, unpredictable weather of Montana. They live in an enormous mansion with a large guest house just a short distance from the beach. Me and my dad used to sit on the back porch and watch the sunrise.

We pulled up to Leana's house, and as soon as mom turned off the engine, the giant front door swung open and Leana flew out. Well more like hobbled out considering the fact that she is pregnant and gonna pop any day now.

Leana "ran" down the steps towards my mother, shouting from the top of her lungs, " Oh my god! You guys made it!"

My mother beamed at her saying, "Yes we finally did, but why in the world are you running down those steps like that. You could have fell and hurt that baby!"

"Ain't nobody gonna fall down those damn stairs girl. Now lets get in the house before we burn!" Leana squealed.

Did I mention that she has no mute button. Like at all. As they gabbed about old times and new beginnings, I was heading up the stairs behind them with two very large suitcases containing our main belongings. I go to reach the last step with my right foot and I trip and fall flat on my face . My mother gave Leana a look and mockingly said, in a very horribly accent, ' Ain't nobody gonna fall down those damn stairs girl.'  She told her to shit up and help me up.
Making it up and through the door, I almost fall again when Leana's husband, Stephen, appeared literally out of nowhere and caught me. He said hello and with an almost too friendly smile he asked if he could take our bags and car down to the guest house. My mother obliged, giving him the keys and as he took my bags from me, his face turned down in deep confusion.

"Um Melissa, is this Marissa," he queried, finally turning away from me to question my mom.

Leana shouted, "Of course it is, who else would she be?" giving him the same confused look he was giving me.

"She just looks so young. How old are you now?"

"I'm seventeen turning eighteen at the end of December," I tell him wondering why in the world he asked, when he just saw me this time last year.

" Yeah of course you are," he said trying miserably to wipe the confused look off his face," Well let me take your things to the guest house."

I swear when he walked away I heard him mumble 'it should have happened by now'.
