Wide brown eyes look at me and they don't belong to Queenie. I hitch a breath and look at the foal laying on the ground. I sprint to the house, Teddy is still not up I slam the door open to see him still sleeping.
"Teddy!" I scream breathless.
His eyes fly open and he looks at the clock.
"It is 6:30 you-"
"Queenie-"
"Baby?"
"Yes."
Teddy throws the covers to the side and quickly throws his black fuzzy rope that says King in studded letters on his back and runs out the door. I jog beside him and we get to the barn in time to the foal starting to stand.
"Oh, he is beautiful," Teddy says looking at the foal.
I nod.
"It it a boy or girl?"
The foal gathered up his legs and used his back feet trying to stand. He slowly used his long front legs to stand on all fours. Queenie stood up and watched her foal. Its coat was freshly licked, some of the bedding was sticking to its long legs that were neatly standing under him.
"Well, he has not fallen yet." Teddy murmured softly knocking on the stall door.
The foal jumped and fell and I shot Teddy a look. He pulled his hands up in surrender and shoved his hands in the pockets of his robe. The foal tried getting up again trying the same approach. His long back legs pushed himself up and his front legs soon caught on. Once he stood up again he took his first shaky steps toward Queenie who nickered her encouragement. Once he got close her started drinking his milk.
I quietly unlocked the stall door, Queenie gave me a calm look telling me it was ok. I let my hand out and stroked her soft nose she was not showing and aggression. I slowly moved closer to the foal. My hand running through her soft coat. When I get a few inches from the foal only then does he notice me. He looks at Queenie who shows no sign of being aggravated or scared. I softly whisper to him and look to see the true gender.
"It is a boy," I say looking at Teddy.
Teddy smiles, "That it great."
I run my hands over Queenie the foal seems ok with me being there, shying away at my quick movements.
"Can you call the vet?" I say softly.
"Is there something wrong?"
"No, he should just check him over."
"He looks a little small."
"Are you calling him a runt?"
"No, just nevermind."
Teddy pulls out his phone, he walks outside and rings the vet.
When he comes back in he tells me the Vet will be here in 30 minutes. He comes into Queenie's stall and runs his hand on Queenie's face she nickers softly I switch sides and let him be near the foal. After a while, Dr.Jones walked through the door and we left the stall do he could examine the foal.
"Does he have a name?"
"Not yet."
Dr.Johnson nods and writes down something. He goes on to check his heartbeat, hooves, and eyes.
"He looks nice and healthy. His confirmation is good and his heart is strong. He is kinda of small though."
Teddy shoots me a knowing look and I shoo him off.
"Is that Ok?"
"Yeah he should be fine."
I smile and hold out my hand for a handshake. Once Dr.Jonhson leaves I turn to Teddy expecting to see an I told you so face..
"I think we have a great racer."
Teddy nods, "I don't know yet."
"When will Lorretta be in?" I say leaning against the stall wall.
Teddy sits on a hay bale, "Next week."
"He is going to have to be nameless for a few days."
"Well, we can register him get all the paperwork," Teddy says, I nod.
I look over at the foal, he is starting to walk confidently, his eyes are bright and daring. He tosses his head and gives a loud whiney. Queenie looks over to him and whinnies back. The foal tries out his voice nickering and being vocal.
"Well, he is a loud one," Teddy mutters.
I laugh and continue to watch the foal. He plays around stretching out his legs, his little fluffy tail bobbing around his coat was starting to dry. A blaze was laid perfectly between his eyes.
"You should let the little firecracker out in the pasture," Teddy said flipping the page of his newspaper.
I nod and grab Queenie's lead rope, opening the stall door I clip on the lead rope and start to lead her out. Queenie resists when she does not see her colt but Teddy shoo him into her line of vision. I walk her to the pasture and then I see the little foal really stretch his legs. He bucks and plays stay near Queenie who was grazing. I smile and go back up to house making sure the gate was locked one last time. Teddy flipped a pancake and yawned. When he was done we ate talking about the colt.
"Did you see the way he stretched his legs like that? It is a good sign I think," I say taking a sip of my orange juice.
Teddy nods and looks out his window to look at him, "He has a lot of energy."
"That's foals for you," I say brushing off the topic.
Teddy shrugs and takes another bite of his pancakes his eyes slowly drift over to the window what he thinks I am not looking. A small pile plays on his lips and I know that is a good sign. I look over at the foal and wonder what I had gotten myself into, I knew it would eventually happen sooner or later and I rather be stuck with him than another foal.
