She walked the halls of her modest home. Chubby five year old hands grabbing at the walls trying to get to the kitchen.
Mum said to call 911 in emergencies. The home phone was the only one she could reach.Blood steadily trickled down her paling cheeks. Bad. Bad was in the house. Something with teeth as sharp as the gremlin's in her book of Grimm fairy tales. Something with eyes yellow like a rare moon. Something she knew better then to confront. Something that would haunt her as a blurry, vague image scaring her senseless in every night-terror.
Footsteps and scratches on the walls that carried her childhood clawed her ears.
Finally, in the kitchen, her young eyes began to blur. The wooden stool the phone stood on was still standing just like any other day, as if it was ignorant of the carnage going on around it. She began to slowly get angry at its normality but stayed focused on the task at hand. Her blood slick feet slid on the bars of the stool, miniature digits grabbed onto the home phone, finally.

Soon she began to hear scratches in the front hall leading to the door and the other exits were locked.
"I can't. They are all over and I'm trapped," she murmured realizing that, like a spring flower, her life would end soon.
Then a man's voice she didn't recognize spoke, "We know you're here. No need to hide." Danger and teasing seeped through his slimy growl. Mara knew better than to try to escape. "Our family's hungry and little girls taste the best,"another voice commented.
Her only chance was to hide. Luckily, she held the medal for best Hide an' seek of the daycare center her parents took her to. Thinking of places to hide was interrupted by claws raking the hallway next to the kitchen. Running out of time she jumped into the cupboard. Still the spots in her eyes kept growing.
"Hngh!" The door busted open and from her hiding spot in the cupboard she could hear the shots of a gun. Then, she blacked out.
~~
"Rufus, call an ambulance! Their girl is still alive, she's just knocked out!" A slightly raspy voice shouted. Mara felt someone picking up her limp body,
