"We should go. Come on let's go. It's late." Kendra shouted to her friends. They groaned and checked the time then agreed to go. They all stumbled sleepily back into the elevator and went back underground. The elevator stopped and they mumbled some goodbyes as they dispersed. Kendra decided to come back tomorrow morning very early with Paige. They could just relax. That night she didn't sleep. She felt as if something was happening. Something new.
Paige and Kendra walked up to Subterra's Transport Center as people started to wake up. They were the only ones there so it took less then three minutes. *Ping* they were here again. Paige and Kendra sat on the cold benches and caught snowflakes. It was now 6:45 and something was happening.
"What's that? Kendra what's happening?" Paige asked in a shaky voice.
"I don't know but it doesn't happen. Like ever!" Kendra answered. There was a bright light peaking up to scorch the ice of Pluto. Kendra had read about this in her Earth studies. This was a thing called 'sun'. The sun was so hot you would die if you touched it. No one could live on it. Paige tugged on Kendra. Paige wanted to go back.
"Come on. We have to tell someone." Kendra said as they ran back to the elevator. The sun laid it's flickering tongues upon the girls. Paige screamed but Kendra stood there silently and felt something she had never before. Natural warmth.
The clatter of the town bell arouse everyone from sleep. The girls had gone to Subterra's council and told them of the sun and it's sudden appearance in their ever peaceful sky.
"What do we do?" Paige questioned the council in a shaky tone.
"We don't know. Don't worry girls we'll figure something out. With that they scuffled off leaving the girls helpless. Snow flew by as everyone bolted not knowing what to do. They raced toward Kendra's house not thinking, and not knowing what to do. Though Kendra was reluctant Paige dragged her away knowing it was safer inside.
"Why go inside when it'll still come out whether we are inside or not? I doesn't make sense!" Kendra puffed as they made their way through the crowds to her house.
"It might be safer. I don't know. Let's just go alright?" Paige pleaded then shrugged her shoulders and continued to sprint. They were almost to the house but then Kendra felt a cold wet drop splash and freeze atop her head. She looked up and saw more raining down like icicles except not frozen yet.
Paige gasped in horror as she realized what was happening. The sun was melting the once solid layer of ice. The thin layer that preserved their lives. Pieces of the ice sheet above broke off as the sun hit, shined on, and melted it. Paige screamed and started crying so hard her body shook.
"We have to go inside Kendra! Now!" screamed Paige. Her world was melting before her eyes and her best friend stood as if frozen next to her. Paige pulled Kendra with all her strength and managed to get her about ten meters and gave up.
"Come with me Kendra. Please come with me..." Paige cried as she saw the yellow and orange arms reaching toward them.
"But it's so beautiful Paige. I've never seen anything like it before and it's so different." Kendra said in a whisper. By now everyone else was either in a corner staring at the fireball or in their homes hiding. Kendra heard Paige's footsteps reluctantly padding away to her home. She knew she should go to but couldn't bring herself to leave this. Kendra sat down in a puddle of which used to be the layer saving them from this intense cold. She suspected the air was now -386 or so but didn't notice because the mesmerizing sun kept her focus. The beams of light from the sun hurt her eyes and made her cry, yet she would not stop staring. Kendra's hair was whipped about in the icy winds as she squinted as the sun and the world around her melt. The radiant red rays of sun and the bitter blue ice surrounded her as she sat and watched as Pluto melted.
