In the beginning, the impala is shown when John sits on the front, holding his sons while watching his house burn. The car is Deans most prized possession and he protects it with nearly the same ferocity with which he protects his family. When a truck from by a possessed trucker smashes into the impala causing serious damage, Sam and Bobby have it towed to Bobby's where Sam refuses to scrap it when he's told it can't be salvaged. Dean later restored the impala himself. Following Dean's death in the season 3 finale, Sam inherits the car which is later given back to Dean in season 4.
