CHAPTER 2: Everything and Nothing
Everything, and nothing, stretched out for miles. The road was an endless stretch of darkness against darkness, the only light source the huge moon hanging amongst the non-existent stars. The white lines down the middle were faded with time, but still managed to split the road into two equal parts. And now, after walking for hours, the road finally disappeared. Or, seperated at least, heading into two directions. If I went right I would have left, and if I went left, I wouldn't be right. I chose right.
I've been walking for seven years, and not once have I ever come across a human being. And yet, standing here, curled up in a corner by my feet, was a tiny girl. After walking for three days after choosing which way to walk, I found an old school. Walking through the rusted gates, now only hanging from one hinge, and creaking slowly in the wind, I found no bodies, but blood stains through out the whole school.
I was going to leave, leave a place that had once been filled with children, their brains being supplied with knowledge from the past that would be needed in the future. About to leave, when I stopped. Instead, I followed my insticts, which led me, to here.
A small sleeping child.
Alone and cold, as seen by the small wracks shaking through her frame. Her body, was basically just taut skin draped over her skeleton. Ribs and bones were clearly countable beneath her rags, and her lips were chapped and bleeding. Her tangled hair was coarse and dirty, tangled into a mess on top of her head.
I knew I couldn't leave her there.
I picked her up, and left with her still sleeping heavily in my arms.
