High school was made easy with the help of his best friend: Lianne.
She was their class President and was a consistent topnotch in the class.
She surely would be the Valedictorian that year.
“Gabriel, don’t forget to study for our English quiz. And don’t forget to answer page 112 in our math book tonight,’ she softly reminded him.
“Thanks for reminding me,” he replied.
However, he never studied that night nor did he answer his Math assignment. He was always dependent on her since their elementary years. She was always there for him. In their English quiz, Gabriel still got high scores through Lianne’s help. She was his seatmate in all subjects.
“What was that? You didn’t study again?”
“I did! It’s just that the lesson was too difficult.”
That was the same excuse the guy would give his friend whenever he copy her math assignments. And she never complained even if at times, he would steal her ideas during oral recitations.
Another special girl to Gabriel was Eliza. She was Lianne’s closest competitor in the honor list and she was the girl of his dreams. She had the looks, the attitude and the brains. And he wanted her to be his girlfriend but she never given extra attention.
Eliza could never equal Lianne’s intellectual abilities, but she was prettier than her; nonetheless, he also liked Lianne a lot, but only as a friend, as his best friend. One afternoon, Gabriel finally took the courage to ask Eliza to accompany him to SM.
When she said yes, he felt he was the happiest lad that day.
The simple date turned out to be memorable and romantic because he was able to tell her his feelings for her. And when he asked her if she could be his girlfriend
she said, “ I can be your girl if I become the first honor this year.”
“That’s impossible. Nobody can beat Lianne, not even you. I don’t mean to hurt you, but that’s the truth.”
“But you can help me.”
“How?”
He really wanted to have Eliza as his girlfriend. He felt so sad and because Lianne was so insistent, he told her what Eliza’s proposition was.
What? You’re asking me to sabotage my own dream?
You’re evil! Gab, I’m your best friend. I hate to say this but I’m very disappointed in you!
She broke down into tears and sobbed so hard, he felt ashamed of himself. It was the first time he ever saw her cry and he hated himself for that.
After that day, Lianne never talked to him nor did she glance at him.
The day came when the teacher announced the names of those in the honor roll that year.
“Our class salutorian is Lianne Gonzalez and Eliza Jacinto is our class first honor. Congratulations to all those who have made it to the top!”
Darkness suddenly enveloped Gabriel. All he could utter was: “ Lianne, my good friend Lianne!”
She was considering his feeling after all! He wanted to cry, fall on his knees and apolize to her, but Lianne was not there.
He looked at Eliza; he felt she was like a trash, a terrible opportunist and a user. Now he hated her and he blamed himself for how things turned out. He then bought red roses and went to Lianne’s place, but Lianne and her family were no longer there.
He was told that Lianne and her family had left for abroad, and that Lianne had always resisted migrating to another country because she didn’t want to leave her best friend. The parents made an agreement with Lianne that if she would emerge as the class first honor, she would be allowed to continue her studies in the Philippines.
Gabriel’s heart sank, tears rolled down his cheeks. She had left! He then realized that Lianne was very dear to him and he loved her more than any girl in his life, but she’s no longer there. Now he lost his heart for he had lost his best friend .
