The Story of Omelas

You all know the story of Omelas.

But if you don't,

Once upon a time, in the middle of California there was a place named Omelas.

Omelas was the happiest city in the world.

They had no reason to be sad.

The weather was perfect.

Nobody died of disease.

They had nothing to worry about.

Once a person was old enough to know the truth about Omelas,

They learned that in order for Omelas to be perfect, there was a sacrifice.

That sacrifice was a little kid had to spend his life locked up in a cage, living in perpetual filth, darkness and misery.

Most people who heard the atrocity turned the other cheek.

But some people grew angry.

And left Omelas.

Those people were dubbed "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas"

Fifteen years later "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas" built a city.

A city better than Omelas.

A city that wasn't happy because there was a sacrifice, because of perfect weather,

They were happy because they were together and that's all that mattered.

They named it New Omelas.

Every Omelian started moving there.

Eventually New Omelas became: Omelas.

And Omelas became: nothing but a sad abandoned city.

Thousands of years later Omelas is still going strong.

Almost everyone is always happy.

But without the sacrifice of the child not ALL people were ALWAYS happy and outgoing.

Those people are people like Constance.

This was really depressing but it's just some backround information about Omelas!

Also if you haven't read "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas" What are you doing with your life?

I mean I kinda just spoiled it but the las part about New Omelas isn't true.

It's still a fantastic book and you should read it!
