A field in the summer sun is a golden haven. A serene place hidden from the contaminated nature of the city. The peacefulness of the place is shattered by the stampede of a young girl, trying to hide from her chaser. She ducks behind a tree, shallowly breathing in the vain attempt to stay hidden. Unfortunately, her skirt dancing in the wind gives away her location.
"Diane, come out, come out wherever you are." her young friend calls, his voice distorted by the flowing breeze. Diane edges slowly around the tree trying to spot the messy brunette boy. Not spotting him, she breathed out a sigh of relief; only to then squeal at the feel of hands around her waist.
"Caught you" her friend Jayden whispered into her ear.
"You cheated" she claimed not wanting to be bested.
"No I didn't. It's not my fault that your skirt is easy to spot. Next time don't wear one."
Diane huffed and crossed her arms indignantly over her chest. The two friends gave way to laughter at her behaviour, both aware neither could stay mad at the other. they stayed in the field playing and talking until the sun started to leave the sky. They were sad at the end of the day, both knowing this wouldn't last forever.
"Jayden, when you move will you promise to stay in touch?" Diane asked close to tears. "I don't want to lose a friend, especially my best friend."
Jayden hugged his friend close. "No matter where I go, we will always be friends. We will always be together."
"You promise?"
"I promise." This was the last thing Jayden said to her before his goodbye. He left the next morning.
