Dear Mum and Dad,

Many times, when I was younger, I would come crying to you about the monsters under my bed and in my dreams. You would stroke my hair, rock me to sleep, and whisper that monsters don't exist, only in my imagination. I thought that if I could handle those terrifying beings in the world of a child's mind, as I grew up, I could handle anything. I pushed the monsters away, locked them away in a tiny box in the back of the dusty crevices in my thoughts, where they couldn't ever surface.

But when I came to encounter those same monsters years later, it broke me, because I realised something. Maybe I shouldn't have spent so much time online - it's probably my own fault for caring, for trusting, for allowing it to get to me. I know I was weak. And now that you're reading this, I've done the weakest thing of all. Remember, Mum, how you used to say, 'Better the Devil you know...'? Well, you were wrong. I know the devil only too well.

I didn't do it only for the nameless, faceless monsters behind the screen - I did it for the nameless, faceless monsters on the streets, in my classrooms, in my head, waiting for me in my nameless, faceless future.

Because I've lived 12 years, and that's 12 years too much, now that I've realised that all monsters are human.
