Up the Mountain

Mason leaned against a tree about halfway up Mt. Ebott. Magnus had went ahead to see if there was anything of importance. Mason sighed, wiping his glasses. They had fogged up, because of him getting so hot from sweating. He had no idea how the rest of the kids he knew with glasses didn't have this problem. It seemed to happen to him no matter where he went. He grabbed his backpack, and grabbed a water bottle about halfway full. Having already drunk three and a half water bottles out of their combined 10, Mason was starting to get skeptical about how they were going to get up AND down without running out of water. Despite the boys' knowledge, they hadn't thought to calculate that the mountain's terrain would be so incredibly rough. Then again, as the path hadn't been trod for a while, it was quite understandable. Although, because of this fact, they were consuming more water than he would have liked. A brief thought passed Mason's mind, 'Hey, water we doing here? Haha, that wasn't even half bad. I'll keep that one in mind.'

Footsteps broke Mason out of his pun related thoughts.

"Yo, Mason!" Magnus called out, waving.

"What's happened?"

"I'm pretty sure there's some water in that cave, I could definitely hear some water dripping down. Do you think we should restock?"

After brief consideration Mason decided that it would be for the best if they stopped there for the return journey, they would need it then the most.

"Nah, let's just wait until the way back. We'll need it more then."

"Alright then, let's resume the climb."

As they neared the top of the mountain, the air had become even colder, so cold that despite how hard they were climbing, they were freezing. Their sweat started to freeze, leaving them both chilled to the bone; so much that they had to put their jackets on again. The previous fifty-five-degrees had dropped to a frigid thirteen, mainly because of the altitude, but partially because of the time in the night. Both boys had been carefully watching their surroundings for anything that seemed abnormal or out of place; but thus far found nothing too alarming. They reached the peak and looked out on their home city with a bit of a wispy feeling in their chests; after all, they had done it. They had scaled the mountain fabled to have been taking the lives of so many other people in the past. Both took out their journals and recorded the events of the night bit by bit, from the base to the cave to the tip. Mason remarked to Magnus, "Well, I guess all of those rumors were just scare tactics, huh?"

"I guess so." But as soon as they had said that, they heard a rustle of the trees. Mason quickly looked around. "What was that? Magnus, did you hear that?" But Magnus wasn't listening. He was gazing at a bush intently. "Hey Magnus, are you even listening?"

"Shut up," Magnus shushed.

"Oi, Magnus, LISTEN!"

"I said shut up!" Magnus growled, punching Mason in the arm. "There's something there," he said, pointing to the bushes he was looking at earlier.

The same bushes shook again, with a blur of purple and blue running out from behind.

"Mason?"

"Yeah?"

"Run."

Both of them took off running in the opposite direction, hearts racing wildly. In the trees above them, there were rustles. Whoever- or whatever that was making those noises earlier was obviously following them.

Mason and Magnus made eye contact. Mason gestured one way and pointed at Magnus. Then he pointed to the other way, and pointed to himself. And finally, he pointed to the trees. Magnus nodded, confirming that he had received the silent message. 'You go that way, and I'll go this way. If we split up, it'll be harder for it to catch us both.'

Magnus rushed through the trees, down the mountain. He only had one thought in his mind. To get down the mountain, to get help, to not get killed, you know, normal things you would be thinking when a crazy THING is chasing you.

He ran and ran until he was sure that his pursuer was gone. He sighed with relief. "Finally," he said.

Crack!

A sharp pain hit Magnus's head. He collapsed, with his vision blurring. The last thing he saw was a girl who looked about eleven with moderately short brown hair with a blue and purple sweater.

Magnus awoke to sharp kicks. He moaned, and slowly opened his eyes. He looked around, seeing Mason next to him, glasses hanging off of his face.

"Hey, you." Mason directed his attention to the girl that he had seen before. He noticed that she was a lot shorter than he thought before and had a threatening look on her face.

"What are you doing on my mountain?"

"Um, what?" A groan beside Magnus made him aware that Mason had awoken.

"W-what? What happened?" Mason asked groggily.

"Oh good, the other one woke up." The girl directed her attention towards Magnus. "He was harder to catch than you, you know. You just let your guard down, and BAM!" The girl made a fist and pounded it on her other hand. "He was actually smart, and kept running, even when I was being careful not to make noises."

She shrugged her shoulders. "Anyways," she said commandingly, "I'll ask it again."

"What are you doing here on my mountain?"

Mason and Magnus exchanged wary glances and Mason slowly replied,

"What do you mean by...my mountain?" The girl frowned, and rewarded them with a tight grip on their ears and a sharp hiss. "Answer the question, twit." Before Mason could do or say something stupid, Magnus cut in, saying, "He's Mason, and I'm Magnus. We were investigating the mountain because of some rumors that have been going around recently. You know...the whole people disappearing fiasco?"

She let go of their ears and muttered to them, "I see. So, that's why you're here. Well, that's what got me stuck up here..."

"Wait, what?" Magnus had a confused look on his face. "What do you mean?"

"You better make yourselves comfortable. It's a long story. My name is Frisk, and this will be more than a bit shocking for you."
