“We’ll be fine,” Claire said, and looked right into my eyes. “Trust me.”
I do trust her, but I just didn’t want her to go without me. I couldn’t lose her, she was my everything. I had no choice so I just nodded. “I don’t like it.”
“Yeah, I know,” she said. “But we also can’t hide for the rest of our lives. This is our town, too.”
She was right. Yeah, the whole town pretty much hates us, but it’s still our town. We still have a right to be here. I got up from the couch and walked over to Claire. I put my hands on her shoulders and looked into her eyes. “Please be careful,” I told her. “Thirty minutes and I’m coming to save your ass. Got it?”
Claire nodded, trying to be serious. “Got it. I’ll be fine, Shane. Don’t worry.”
I couldn’t help but smile a little. She was so cute when she was trying to be serious. “I know you will.” I kissed her gently on the lips. “I love you, Claire.”
“I love you, too.”
Claire pulled away and I watched her leave with Eve. I sighed and plopped back onto the couch, grabbing my game controller. I unfroze the game, and started killing zombies. Michael sank into his recliner and began to softly play his guitar.
I started thinking about one of Claire’s first days at the Glass House. When I convinced her to play a game with me instead of study. How excited she would get whenever she killed a zombie. Thirty minutes, I told myself. Thirty minutes and she’ll be mine again. Suddenly, the ‘Game Over’ screen appeared and snapped me out of my thoughts. I sighed and glanced at my watch. It has been twenty minutes and they weren’t home yet.
I glanced at Michael and saw that he was still playing. I hear him so often that sometimes I end up tuning him out. I pulled out my phone and started playing with it. God, I probably seem like an obsessive, controlling asshole, I thought. Like, it’s only thirty minutes. I looked back up at Michael and noticed him staring at me. “What?” I asked.
“You’re not obsessive and controlling, you’re just worried, and it’s okay because a couple days ago, we almost got killed by the Founder herself,” Michael replied.
Oh, I had actually said that out loud… That’s awkward. I sighed again. “Michael, what are we going to do?”
He shrugged. “What we always do. Fight our hearts out for what we believe is right and win.”
I smiled. “Of course.” I looked at the time on my phone. “Alright, it’s been twenty-five minutes. I’m calling Claire.”
He pulled out his phone while I dialed Claire’s number. I waited for her to pick up but it went to her voicemail. I hung up and looked at Michael. “No answer.”
Michael sighed. “Okay, I’m calling Eve.” After a few seconds he tossed his phone on the coffee table. “Nope, she’s not answering either.”
“Let’s give it a couple more minutes then we’ll go out. Maybe they ran out of black nail polish and Eve had to pick a different color”
Michael smiled. He carefully laid his guitar back in its case and fastened the lid shut. “Shane, if you’re just going to sit there with the game over screen on, I’m going to make you pay the whole electric bill.”
