As soon as the morning bell chimed in the speaker attached to our ceiling, I was up and awake. I glanced at the small clock on the upper left hand corner of the farthest wall. It was the same time as every morning. 5:30. I carefully lifted the filthy bed sheet off of my body and reached for my clothes neatly stacked on the night stand. I changed into my skinny cargo pants and the roomy flannel button down. I stepped into my boots and then laced them, then I threw my hair into a messy bun before I decided to wake the others.
Xoi (zoy), was the first one I woke up. She slept in a single bed next to mine, and usually got breakfast ready well I woke all the boys up. Xoi was my 22 year old sister. She had always protected me and cared for me my entire life, and was willing to do anything for me. Although she was my sister, she looked nothing like me and my brother. Instead of light brown hair and blue/green eyes, she had darker brown hair and blue eyes, complements of my mother. Carefully I shook her shoulder crouching down so I could meet her eyes. After a few shakes she opened her eyes and smiled at me lifting herself from the bed. "What will it be this morning?" Xoi asked me smirking.
"Well, let's see... Oatmeal?" I flashed her a winning smile. The only food we ever had in the morning was oatmeal. We could barely afford that, but we still had enough to eat, and that was all we needed. Xoi made her way to the makeshift kitchen in the corner. She opened the one cupboard hanging lopsided on the wall and pulled out the container of oatmeal, which was 3/4 of the way gone.
I stood up and looked up onto the bunk bed that was above me. Dane occupied the bed above me. He was the eldest of all of us at the age of 24, and he was my biological brother. He had the same light brown hair and green/blue eyes as I do. His hair was buzzed short the way he liked it and he had his face shaved clean of any facial hair, which was new.
"Dane, get up." I said fairly loudly into his ear. He opened his eyes slightly and provided me with a sharp, " No." I simply moved on because I knew that he would get up. He knew the rules.
I took a couple steps and planted myself in front of Rudy and Riders bunk bed. These two were the easiest to wake up, and that was saying something. Rudy was older than me and had his priorities set straight. Rudy, at the age of 19, slept on the lower bunk. Rudy had blonde hair and bright blue eyes. He was quite thin but was very muscular as well. I liked him just a bit more than just a friend, but the feeling was not mutual.
Rider was my first cousin. He shared the light brown hair with me and Dane but had hazel eyes instead. He looked quite young to be 18. I gently tapped Riders face and he opened his lids. "Let's go." I said quite loudly pointing harshly at the clock. Despite Riders appearance he was not one to be kind with. He required a bit of pushing to get up. I crouched down and tapped serge on the face with a little more force. He was quite a heavy sleeper.
"Vuut..." He groaned.
"Get up." Was all I said before moving to the final set of bunk beds.
This was where Azar and Pierce slept. Pierce was impossible to wake up. He could sleep through anything, except pain. I slapped his head a little harder than necessary, and he stirred attempting to whack my hand away. "Get up now or I'll get the knife." He groaned rather loudly at my comment but did not make any move to get up.
I gave up and crouched down to wake up Azar. "Please get up Az." I had learned long ago that Azar was the easiest to get up when you were kind with him. Unlike the others he would refuse to get up if I was harsh with him. As soon as he opened his eyes I began the all to familiar morning routine. I made my way to the side of the room and grabbed a bowl of the oatmeal. The gooey oatmeal only made it up to less than halfway up in the bowl. I picked up a spoon laying on the counter and shoved the food down my throat. It was already 5:45 A.M and school started at 6:00. As I was eating, Dane and Rider made their way into the kitchen.
