"Hey Sherlock, a friend of mine gave me two tickets to the amusement park if you wanted to go. It's a nice day out and business is slowing at this time of day." John pulled out two tickets that were perforated on one side. He waited for Sherlock's response with hungry eyes. The truth was, Sherlock had a slight fear of heights. He didn't want to upset John, but he didn't want to have to ride anything too tall.
"Sure." Sherlock hid his nervousness not too well. The whole way to the park, he shook his leg, sweated uncontrollably, and couldn't even take a normal breath. He looked over to John, who was the complete opposite.
"We're here." John turned his head and smiled a big grin to his friend. Sherlock tried to nonchalantly act excited back. They exited the cab, and John pulled out the two tickets from his khaki shorts. The two waited in line to hand over their tickets and that whole process. Sherlock vigorously tapped his fingers against the rail separating the lines.
"Are you alright?"John asked. Sherlock shook his head and tried to collect himself. He never liked roller coasters or anything of that nature. Growing up, his 'friends' and brother always teased him about how he was a baby. But the worst was when the school field trip to the theme park started occurring in secondary school. He would sit out, eat, play games, purchase things from the shops, and just simply walk around. The worst moments were when there was an odd number of kids and they would want to ride a big ride. Who was the only kid ever available? Sherlock. And when he would say no, the kids would hate him for months to come.
"Let's go here!" John pointed up, up, way up into the sky to a shocking green coaster hundreds of feet up. Sherlock's face got red and his legs stiffened.
"That might have a long line...let's go there, look, no line!"Sherlock quickly pointed to a ride much like the teacups though it moved much faster and the center spun as well.
"Ok." John and Sherlock were the first in line for the next run. After waiting only a minute, Sherlock and John boarded the same cart. The ride started after the worker gave the speech about safety and warnings. Sherlock was just so happy to have avoided one of the big roller coasters that he almost didn't hear John.
"C'mon, the ride is over." John pushed back the safety bar and stepped out. Sherlock walked off like nothing had happened, where as John wobbled around like he had one too many drinks. The steps were going to be a challenge for John. Sherlock waited at the bottom for John to tumble down. John went to trip on the last step, but Sherlock held him from falling any farther. They grabbed each other's forearms tightly.
"Sorry, rides like these make me a little sick." John was able to regain balance. Sherlock felt guilty the rest of the day. John did something for him, so it would only be fair if he did the same. The day went on and Sherlock endured every ride they had to go on. Thankfully, most weren't as bad as Sherlock thought they would be.
"We should be leaving soon. But before we do, we should ride the green one from earlier." Sherlock hoped John had forgotten about that one or by some miracle, wished it had broken down. Unfortunately, the ride wasn't broken and the line was only a few minutes. Sherlock stood calculating the height, speed, airtime, and velocity. Before he knew it, they would be riding in the next cart that came through. Sherlock watched the coaster without taking a second to look away. John tapped his shoulder.
"Where do you want to sit?" John let Sherlock look at the row of seats. It sat twenty people.
"Uh, front." Sherlock felt most comfortable right up close because he could see clearer and look out at everything. With shaking hands, he pulled his lap bar down. He did breathing exercises to calm his heart.
"Ready for launch." The worker said and flipped the switch to start the ride. The train of people clapped and laughed and had their hands up already. The cart slowly left the station and made a quick, sharp left. Straight ahead was nothing but straight track, but then a vertical climb could come to view a quarter mile down. At this rate, Sherlock thought he would be in the clear.
"John, to be honest, I'm deathly afraid of this ride." Sherlock admitted. The cart pulled back a bit. The whole train roared with excitement. Why? In a split second, the cart took off, zero to fifty. Sherlock stayed wide-eyed pressed against his seat. The hill came faster than expected. With no sign of slowing down, the cart climbed the hill, then showed no mercy to stop as it sped down the complete vertical drop.
"John!" Sherlock shrieked. His shaking hand held on to John and the other to the lap bar. The coaster dropped and looped and swerved. When it was over, Sherlock sighed.
"You did it!" John punched Sherlock's arm.
"I know." Sherlock was too relieved and too impressed at what he did. Best of all, he overcame one of his fears with the person that was most important to him.
