You were so angry, it was unbelievable.

You could only imagine what your face looked like right now. Your dad had always said that frowning for a long time would make you grow up into a troll or something. You used to believe in the silly things he said before, but not anymore. Not right now. Not when you were dealing with this – this – pabo.

I'm good at finding things, he said. You mentally grumbled.

I'm good at climbing trees, he said.

I'm good at untying things, he said.

I can do anything, he said. An image of his toothy grin beaming down at you flashed in your head.

"You know what you're also good at?" You raged, glaring. You didn't wait for a reply. "You're also good at being stupid, and getting hurt, and not listening even though I told you we should've just asked for help!"

Jungkook opened his mouth to retort, but you didn't let him.

"What if you died? What then, Kookie?" You huffed, uncrossing your arms when you felt your eyes tear up. "If that happened, I would be saying all of this to your tombstone instead, you know!"

The boy laughed, making you glare at him some more.

"But I didn't die, so you won't be kicking my tombstone. Besides, it's just my wrist,"

"Yeah, your now-broken wrist. Broken."

"It'll heal," he smiled at you sweetly.

You watched him for a moment longer, feeling your anger drain away with each second. Finally, you sighed. Sometimes, you wondered why Jungkook had this effect on you. Just one smile and then poof! Everything was forgiven and forgotten.

The afternoon was supposed to be fun. You and Jungkook, being childhood friends, were supposed to be playing with the kite he and his family brought from Busan. It had been a while since their last visit, but you and Jungkook always kept in contact with phone calls or parcels of little gifts. Both of your parents were good friends and were catching up when it happened.

You supposed that your backyard wasn't as good as a beach or park, but it was big enough to run around in. Plus, your old mango tree had one huge tyre swing. It was big enough that both you and Jungkook could still fit, despite being [age] already.

But neither of you felt like swinging, and honestly, it was getting awkward being close or touching Jungkook after all the time apart. Although for some reason, Jungkook didn't seem to think that way at all. He hugged you and grabbed your hand, dragging you out to play as soon as you met at the door.

And so, after giving you the kite ("Your early early early birthday present." He had smiled happily, "But don't worry, I'll still send you a gift on your actual birthday."), the two of you took turns flying it. The design was cute, but didn't it look like it was for little little kids. You'd always wanted one specially made in Busan ever since Jungkook sent you a picture of his own. You were so happy and thankful, all the while admiring the kite in the sky that you didn't realise it was already diving down into the branches of your mango tree. And then, it was gone.

Jungkook had started climbing before you could even blink.

At that time, you could hear your parents, still talking and laughing from inside. When you turned your attention forward again, Kookie was already so far up. Apparently the kite strings had looped around one of the outer branches.

Your dad had told you repeatedly not to climb so high because the wood was thinner. You also knew this to be true from your own experiences trying to sneak away some mangoes. But even when you yelled all this to Jungkook, he stayed stubborn and reassured you that he could get your kite back. In fact, he was so busy reassuring you (while untying the string) that he didn't see the end of his path until it was too late.

The nearest doctor was said he was lucky to have gotten just a broken wrist.

In some ways, it was almost funny that the kite was perfectly fine even after falling with Jungkook.

Now, sitting in the clinic on the bench with a bandaged Kookie while both of your parents dealt with the adult stuff at the front desk, you felt absolutely tired. Meanwhile, the boy continued to smile like he wasn't hurt at all.

"Why did you do it?" You asked quietly.

"Mm?" Jungkook hummed, looking up from his watch on the adults just outside the room.

"I know you're smart, Jeon Jungkook. You knew it was dangerous to climb so high but you did it anyway. Why? It's just a kite—"

Jungkook 'tsk'-ed. "No, it's not 'just a kite'. It's your kite."

When your expression stayed blank, silently saying "so what?", he continued. "I know how much you've wanted one. And you looked so happy when we were flying it, I just..." the rest of his sentence trailed off in mumbles. You felt your brows furrow as you watched him.

"What?"

Mumble mumble. It looked almost like he was... embarrassed?

You opened your mouth to repeat your question when Jungkook quickly blurted out:

"I wanted—I like seeing you smile, so I had to get it back for you."

Your jaw dropped further. Jungkook looking at anywhere but you and soon enough, you began to feel embarrassed too as the room became silent.

Did you hear that right? But then again, even if you heard it right... you really weren't sure how to feel about that. Of course, you knew from friends, unnies in the neighbourhood, and friends with unnies – girls who knew about love and crushes and that all jazz, so it could (maybe)(possibly)(probably) be possible that Jungkook liked you....

In your head, you knew that statement ended with a question mark.

Apparently tired of the silence, Jungkook looked back at you. He glanced away before clearing his throat.

"W-what are you looking at me like that for?" he said, kind of pouting. His cheeks looked pink.

A short giggle echoed around the room. You realised after that you had giggled. And after that, another giggle followed, and another, until you were laughing as quietly as you could in a clinic.

To think that Kookie – Jeon Jungkook, the wonder boy that you'd know since you were in diapers to both be a bit of an overachiever and a blessing – was acting all flustered and shy after falling from a tree all to make you smile.

You felt unbelievably happy at that fact.

Jungkook's face was fully pink now. "Wha-what?" He exclaimed.

Trying to calm yourself, you just shook your head and leaned forward to catch him in a hug before he could exclaim anything else.

"[Y/N]?" He said, freezing up in your hold.

You refused to let go. "Promise you won't get hurt like this again, okay?"

"Bu—"

"Promise?" You repeated, moving away but not breaking eye contact.

Jungkook pursed his lips, glancing away quickly before nodding. "Promise."

"Good." You smiled, gently poking that cast around his wrist. Happy to see you smiling again, Kookie gave you his usual bunny-toothed grin.

After a moment, his smile faded and a serious kind of look formed on his face. You raised your eyebrows expectantly, practically hearing your name before he said it. But, in the next second, instead of hearing "[Y/N]", Jungkook's eyes darted to somewhere over your shoulder and shouted,

"Mum!"

With the moment shattered, you whipped around in your seat and squawked.

Both of your parents peeked into the room by the doorway, holding up their phones as they kept recording.
