"Promise me," she said.
He was silent, his brow furrowed, the corners of his mouth downturned.
"I don't know if I can."
Her voice was pained. "There's no one else I can ask this from."
The lines in his face and his forehead deepened. He appeared older than his years. He had paled since the conversation had begun.
"Saying it won't make it so."
Her eyes remained upon him. She placed her hand on his. Her touch was tender.
"I know that you'll make the words true if the time comes."
His eyes looked through her, unseeing. They sat, silent, hand in hand. For some time there was no sound in the room but their breaths. Finally, he sighed and began to nod.
"I promise," he whispered.
