The virus first started in Hawaii. Someone ate tainted shark meat and from then on, it spread like wildfire. One man on vacation, without knowing he had the virus, left Hawaii and went back to his home in Georgia. By then, it was too late. He had already transformed into one of the undead, biting and infecting his wife and son. They left the house as zombies in search of flesh to feed on, sending the whole neighborhood into a frenzy. The media was called and well, everything went downhill from then on.

My name's Alex. My mom chose it for me because it means "defender of mankind", little did I know that it would actually mean something someday.

My mom was eaten alive by the undead in our little lakeside cabin in California. I watched through the window from outside as she was being eaten away, screaming to me. I stayed there, paralyzed by fear as she laid on the ground, bloody and raw. It was when she got back up, eyes glazed over, skin pale and blood spewing out of her mouth that I ran as fast as I could away from the window, away from the house, away from the memories. All those memories. Shattered.

It was then that I vowed to slay the zombies, avenge my mother and live as long as I possibly could.

First things first, I needed weapons.

I walked for what seemed like hours until I came upon a gas station. There was only one car and it was parked in front. I jogged up to the shattered double doors. Blood dripped from a sharp, pointy part of the broken glass. I looked down at my feet to see that I had stepped in a pool of blood. I hoped whoever's blood this was got away.

I stepped through the hole in the door and crunched over the broken glass in search of something, anything, to use as a weapon. The shop was completely trashed. Snacks and blood everywhere.

I walked behind the counter and saw the cashier laying on the floor, eyes wide open and his intestines on the floor next to him. I choked down vomit and turned away. The gory sights still took some getting used to. I turned back around and saw an emergency ax on the other side of the cashier. I squatted down, picked it up and twirled it in my hand. Perfect. Before my dad died, he was a woodsman. He taught me how to cut down trees using an ax, so this was a perfect weapon to find.

Just then I heard the clocking of a rifle and a teenage girl's voice.

"Drop the ax and turn around."

I stayed put, contemplating what this girl was saying. I finally meet a real, live human and she's threatening to blow my brains out.

"Now!" She yelled.

I stood up and turned around slowly with my hands above my head and the ax still in one hand. I looked up at the girl. She looked a little younger than me with black hair, blue eyes and a fit body.

"Drop the ax!" She growled, obviously getting more impatient.

"Look, I don't want any trouble-"

I stopped dead in my tracks. A zombie comes up behind her in the distance and charges at her.

In a panic I threw the ax. It flew past the girl and swiftly lodged into the zombie's head. Blood trickled down, slowly at first, then started coming down in a black stream. The zombie fell to the ground, dead.

I looked at the girl. Her mouth was open and her face was pale.

"Y-you..." She looked down at the dead zombie and fell to her knees. I rushed over and knelt down next to her.

"Are you okay?" I asked her.

"You... saved my life..." She looked up at me. "Thank you."

I smiled a half smile. "You're welcome."

"I'm sorry I threatened to kill you." she said as she looked at the corpse again.

I stood up and yanked the ax out of the zombie's forehead causing more blood to ooze out like a volcano.

"It's no problem," I wiped the blood off on my shirt, "Do you know of any other survivors?"

She nodded. "Yeah. My brother and sister. They went to find resources."

"Do you mind if I tag along with you guys? Traveling alone is suicide."

She smiled. "Of course not. I do owe you for saving me."

"Thank you." I replied.

"No, thank you. I'm Erica by the way." She said as she held out her hand.

I shook it. "I'm Alex."

"Well, Alex, I think we should start looking for my siblings. It gets dark in about two hours."

I nodded.

She walked out of the store through the back door and I followed.

"Chase!" she screamed into the sky, once she was outside. "Jacqueline!"

I heard a three note whistle then Erica nodded toward the woods. "They're in there."

We walked into the woods where we met a guy my age and a little girl who looked about seven years old. The boy, Chase, nodded toward me.

"Who's this?"

"A girl I met. Alex this is Chase, Chase this is Alex. Alex saved my life." She looked at me and gave me a half smile.

"That's exactly why I didn't want to leave you alone!" he said as he threw his hands in the air.

"Look, I'm sorry but we needed to find weapons. She found an ax. She's pretty handy with it too," she nodded at me, "Show him."

I hesitated for a moment. "Okay."

I turned to the tree on my right and took a few steps back. I lifted the ax and hurled it at the tree. It stuck in the middle of the tree trunk perfectly.

Chase's eyebrows rose, impressed. Erica's little sister, Jacqueline, smiled.

"That was awesome! Wasn't it awesome, Chase?" She asked pulling on her older brother's sleeve.

He looked down at her then looked up at me and nodded. "That was cool. Alright, she can stay."

Erica smiled and Jacqueline jumped up and down. "Yay!" She squealed. She ran up to me and hugged my legs.

She was so adorable. A small, chubby cheeked version of Erica. "We're going to be best friends, okay?" She said, looking up at me.

I smiled down at her. "Okay, Kiddo."

I looked at Chase. He was smiling at her too. Then he looked up at me and gave a slight smile that made my stomach flop. He was pretty cute. Maybe if we weren't in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, he would be dateable, but since we are, I'm not going to focus on my feelings, I'm going to focus on one thing, and that's surviving.
