"Hey, wanna hang out tonight and pull a couple drinks?" Eiji, my college buddy, asked.
"Um, I don't drink," I politely declined.
"Well, there's a first to everything. You can try drinking tonight with us or just, you know, hang out," he said.
"Well..."
"Ok, let's go," came a voice behind me. Even though I knew whose voice it was, I turned around.
"Haru!" I exclaimed.
He stared forward. "Let's go."
"Well, you can come too. The more the merrier!" Eiji grinned as he scratched his head. He clearly did not anticipate Haru saying something like that. He might not have even expected him to come.
"So, meet at Dirty Joe's at 9pm tonight," his buddy, Atsushi said as he walked away with Eiji.
Eiji turned around and waved. "See ya!"
I smiled and waved as they walked away. As soon as I made sure they were not at hearing distance, I turned to Haru.
"You know, you don't have to come. I know you're not a people person and you don't even drink alcohol."
"I'm going," he said, determined.
"Ok. Hey, Haru, how about we get some popsicles first?"
We arrived at Dirty Joe's at 9pm, as discussed. I felt uncomfortable, for this was my first time in the pub. The place reeked of cigarettes and alcohol. Music blared and it was dimly lit. Haru and I sat at the bar, absently looking around.
"Can I get you anything?" smiled a woman with thick makeup and a tight, revealing dress. Her dress was so short, it looked like a tight, long shirt.
"Um, not for now," I say, startled. I felt my cheeks getting warm and I looked away. "Thank you," I mumbled.
She rested her elbow on the table. "Why, aren't you a cutie?"
Before I could blush more, Haru interrupted, "A glass of water, please."
She quickly directed her attention to him. "Coming right up."
I heaved a sigh of relief as she walked away to get a glass of water.
"Hey! Over here!" A voice exclaimed.
I leaned back and saw Eiji and Atsushi waving and grinning. Their faces were already red. How much alcohol did they drink already? Didn't they say that they would be here at 9?
I walked to them and smiled as Haru followed with his glass of water.
"Wanna try some?" Eiji held a giant glass of beer. "Drink from the other side of it."
"U-um, ok." I sipped a little and forced myself to swallow it. I gasped for air. It tasted horrible.
"Heheh, guess alcohol isn't your thing, eh?" Eiji chuckled.
"It tasted horrid," I said, making Eiji chortle and Atsushi giggle.
I heard a little "Hmph" behind me. I turned to see Haru at the bar.
"Champagne, please."
"Haru?" I say, surprised. I thought he has never tried alcohol.
"Ooh, aren't you classy? I'll have one for me, too," Eiji said, making his way to the bar.
As soon as the glass of champagne arrived, Haru took it and gulped some of it down. He gave it to me and said, "Try mine."
"Um, Haru, what's gotten into you all of a sudden? Your face... It's already turning red..."
"Try mine."
I sipped it. It tasted better than the beer, but it still tasted disgusting.
His legs wobbled and his face was all flushed up.
"Haru..."
He swallowed down the rest of the drink and slammed it on the table.
"Another!"
He drank down another glass of champagne.
"Haru! Stop! You're already drunk! Why don't we go-"
"Makoto! What are you saying? I can drink more!"
"No! Stop, Haru, stop! Please..."
He paused and stared into my eyes.
"Fine, but you need to promise me one thing."
"Anything, Haru! Please, just stop-" I say, desperately.
"You... You have to obey everything I say," Haru replied, a little too fast, his voice getting a little breathy. He suddenly burst out laughing.
He got down from his seat roughly, almost falling. I caught him.
"Seriously? Is he alcohol intolerant?" Eiji chuckled. "Look at him getting all shaky just after two drinks!"
"Eiji, this is no laughing matter," I said.
I apologized to the guys and quickly carried Haru home.
