I stared at Nihal who was lost in his own world, so clearing my throat I asked, "how was your college today?" Which made Nihal jump in his place.

He slightly nodded his head, "it was fine."

Then he resumed to stare at the plate, occasionally taking a bite. And I silently observed him. We both had our dinner in silence. Both of us missing our mother who was fast asleep in the adjacent room. She couldn't sit for long time and what scared us was her condition which became more and more worse as the days passed by.

The nurse would take care of her in our absence but I wished that I could take better care of her.

Walking up to the sleeping form of my mother, I pulled the cover over till her bust before sitting beside her. The calmness on her face gave me peace of mind. The pain she is constantly in at regular intervals always broke my heart.

And what hurt me more was the fact that I couldn't help her in anyway. We did our best but the doctors had given up. It was official that our mother was a guest for few more days.

Wiping the stray tear that escaped my eyes, I got up and exited the room.
I had a lot of school work to do.

"So the light gets refracted when there's a change in the medium," I explained as I showed the board.

When I turned to look at the students, I found all the girls had their heads rested on their palms with a dreamy look on their faces.

I just blinked, not knowing what to do. Finally I asked, "any questions?"

And five hands were raised, making me gulp out loud. They were those hands I wished hadn't been raised. Those five girls only asked unrelated things or things that put me in uncomfortable situation. I ignored the five hands and looked at the sixth hand, "yeah Yu Jin?"

The Asian boy straightened up a bit as he asked, "Mr. M, are there any chances for the light to reflect back to the same medium without the mirror?"

I bobbed my head thoughtfully, "excellent question, Yu Jin. Well, there happens to be a phenomenon where when the light passes through a certain angle, the light ray shall reflect back. It's called as the total internal reflection," I cut my explanation short when I saw Ms. Greene enter the classroom. She had a grim expression on and looked at me with pity.

I could feel my stomach drop. I didn't know why but I already felt my nerves set in.

"Mr. Malhotra, can I talk to you for a minute?" Ms. Greene politly asked. I nodded at her before looking back at the class, "I'll be back in a few, till then read page 154."

With that we both scurried out of the classroom, away from any prying eyes. Ms. Greene turned to face an anxious me and pursed her lips trying to compose herself.

"I don't know how to break it to you, Mr. Malhotra. I have never been in the delivery end of such kind of news, so please forgive me," her talk only made me more and more anxious.

"What happened?" I asked to cut to the chase. My heart was thumping away in my chest.

"Your mother..." my heart dropped and blood ran cold at her words, "she had another major attack. She's desiring for your presence for her last minutes."
