Chapter FourKassidy couldn't express how much she was enjoying her time just signing with Jamie. He was so natural, so himself. She hadn't met someone like this in such a long time.
You'll have to play me a song on your piano sometime, Kassidy signed.
She watched as red creeped up his cheeks, Okay.
Kassidy was about to ask him to go on a walk together when her phone buzzed. She opened the text message and saw her mothers text; come home now. You've been gone an hour.
Kassidy frowned and tucked her phone away. She smiled apologetically and signed, I'm really sorry, but I have to go now.
Jamie smiled and stood up pushing his chair in, it's okay. It was nice finally meeting you.
She nodded, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, Yes, it was. We'll have to do it again.
What about tomorrow?
Kassidy sighed, the next day was her mothers birthday and there was no way she would be able to get away, I'm sorry I can't. I'll message you when I can though.
Without another word she turned on her heels and walked home. She opened the front door and shut it quietly. Her mother came out from the kitchen, "Where have you been?"
"I told you I was meeting with Jamie. Miranda's son," she explained.
Her mother crossed her arms across her chest and Kassidy watches as her pointed nose flared, "you should have told me what time. A fireworks show is in a half hour. Do you know what would've happened if you were there for that?"
Kassidy opened her mouth to respond but her mother continued, "do you know how Jamie would've treated you if he saw you go into an attack?"
Kassidy hung her head and nodded, "mom, I've been talking to Doctor Fredrick. He wants to use me as a test."
Her mom raised her eyebrows, "what do you mean?"
"He and some other doctors and scientists have started an experiment. Take me and a few others who have the same problem take us into new and different living quarters and test the vaccine that they've been working on."
Her mother smirked, "Kassidy Grace, there is no way in hell Im letting you be a guinea pig for their experiments."
"But what if it works mom?"
"What if it doesn't?"
Kassidy threw her hands out, "why do you have be pessimistic about everything!?"
Her mom yelled, "I'm doing this because I'm your mother and I'm trying to do what's best for you."
Kassidy headed for the stairs and muttered, "what's best for me? Or what's best for you?"
She ran up the steps and into her room. She locked the door and sat on her bed holding her face in her hands. She brushed her hair back and laid on her back studying her ceiling. There was no way she was going to be able to sit back and let this opportunity pass by her.
Pulling her phone out she closed her blinds and called her doctor.
"Kassidy? Have you talked to your mother?" Her doctor asked.
She bit her lip and lied, "Yes and she's really happy about it."
"Great! I'll be sending the information to both you and your mothers emails so you know officially when everything will be starting."
Kassidy tried to hide her disappointment. She didn't know how she was going to hide the email from her mom, "okay, sounds good, thanks Doctor Fredrick."
She hung up and sat back on her bed. Bangs came from outside and she knew the fireworks show had begun.
Tears fell from her eyes and she sank into her pillow to muffle her sobs. Was it too much to wish to be a normal girl?
