I took my feet out of the water and put my shoes back on before leaving the lake. I was walking around on the sidewalk for hours before I realized I was going nowhere. Suddenly a car starting slowing down before stopping right in front of me.
"Get in," Coach Arin said.
I nodded and opened the door without saying anything.
We sat in silence for about ten minutes before Coach asked, "What were you doing just wondering around?"
"To tell you the truth, I don't really know. I was just kinda walking for the heck of it," I replied.
We sat in silence again until I said, "Coach, I'm sorry I walked off your field today."
"That makes two of us."
"It won't happen again, sir."
"It better not or else you're off the team."
"Yes sir, I understand."
Coach took a deep breath before asking, "How's your grandma?"
"She's okay, but her dementia isn't getting any better. Like today, she forgot that my mom and dad aren't around. She thought they were going to make us lunch."
Coach stopped the car, "Did you talk to your dad about this?"
"Yeah, I talked to him a few hours ago, but he...he wasn't much help," I said biting my lip.
"Do you want to talk about it?"
"No sir, not really."
A we pulled up to my house Coach said, "Tomorrow, 6 am at the field, don't be late."
"I'll see you then, Coach. Thanks for the ride."
