Max’s PoV –

I gently took her hand and placed it in mine. She looked so weak just lying there, eyes closed and motionless on the hospital bed.

I looked over at the other side of the room. The boys were all sitting down, not looking like their usual selves - they’d seen it all happen, every second of it. But none of them felt as bad as I did, none of them knew how much pain was going through me looking at my girlfriend lying there, so close to death.

I looked back down at Esmee, if she passed then my life just wouldn’t be worth living anymore. She’s my soul mate, the one who’s always there for me.

Casting my mind back to happier times, I thought of the day we first met.

“You caught my eye as soon as I met you,” I whispered softly to her. I knew she was unconscious, but I was sure there was still a part of her that could hear me. “It was at me mam’s birthday party, when we first met. I remember you coming up to me and introducing yourself. I knew from the minute you spoke to me, that you were the one for me,” I continued to tell her, “That day when I first asked you to come out to dinner with me, and you wore that amazing blue dress - that was one of the most amazing days of my life, because it was our first date.” I could feel tears in my eyes, there were so many things I could be thankful for because of Esmee, and I wanted to tell her them all just in case we didn’t have much time left together. “You’ve helped me to grow as a person, and if it wasn’t for you I would never of gone to this audition to be in the band. You’ve helped me every step of the way, and I will never forget that. But most of all, when I’m with you nothing else matters, I would do anything for you…” I broke off. This couldn’t be our last day together, we had so much more happiness to come into our lives. We had so much more to do together, it just wasn’t fair!

Tom came up behind me, “Mate, if you need some time alone us boys can leave?” he sounded sullen, but his strong Bolton accent was still clear as ever.

“That would be nice,” I replied, without making eye contact with him – I didn’t want him to see me like this.

The boys quietly left the room as I sat down on the bed next to Esmee. I stroked her brown hair as I sung softly to her.

“Cause you are the sunshine that makes my day, and I wont let them take that away…I’ll be your hero who’s standing strong who protects you from any fight, and if your battles are piling on I will take them on with all my might,” I paused for a second, “You don’t know what the future holds so I’ll be your personal soldier.”

I leaned in closer to her, whispering quietly in her ear, “I don’t know what’s going to happen, Esmee…but I just want you to know that I’ll be your personal soldier.”
