"Lacey! Hurry up, you don't wanna be late for your first day!" My mother called. I finished the last touches to my makeup before straightening my blouse. Today I was going back to college. Back to a cramped dorm. I was studying to be a doctor, I was always interested in the medical subject.

"Lacey!" My mother called again.

"I am coming!" I yelled back at her. I grabbed my back, slinging it over my shoulder. I ran down the stairs and entered the kitchen. I slipped into my seat as my mother served me a plate of eggs and bread. "Thanks."

My mother smiled in response and went back to cooking everyone else's breakfast. I watched some TV which was placed on the kitchen counter. Of course, my mother had put on the news. She's always about 'knowing what's going on in the world'. The reporters were covering a story on a natural disaster in California. A deadly 7.3 earthquake; a hundred people have died.

"Wow, there have been a lot of dangerous incidents in the past month..." My mother mumbled aloud.

"I blame global warming."

"There are still some people missing, the police-" the reporter was cut off by the TV all of a sudden turning off.

"That's strange..." My mother walked over the TV and played with the antenna. Yes, we still have those really old, thick and small TVs with the antenna. We're cheap people.

"It's probably old." I said while chewing on some of my meal.

"Don't eat with your mouth full." My mother scolded. I rolled my eyes and swallowed. I reached for the glass of orange juice but before I could reach it I noticed the juice was swaying as if it was shaken. The weird part was I hadn't touched it. Then the shaking became more vigorous and the light that was attached to the feeling fell straight onto the table, barely missing me. A few glass shard hit my arm but other than that I was fine.

"Mum, what's happening?" I worriedly asked, getting up from my spot. The house started shaking and the glasses and plates in the cupboard rattled and the cupboard fell into the sink.

"Get up and run outside!" My mother yelled over the loud rattling noises. The ground was shaking and it became stronger and stronger. I was knocked down a couple of times but I sprung up to my feet every time. My mother held the door open for me and we both ran out of the house. Just in time, too, because the house collapsed once we were a few meters away from the house.

I looked around and saw our neighbors house collapse but they didn't make it out. Everyone else was running out of their homes in a panic.

Trees were being knocked down onto cars and houses. Everybody started running around not sure where to go but they had to get far from trees and houses. Most of us were in the middle of the street.

I was scared out if my mind. I couldn't think straight, I was depending on my mother to tell me what to do.

"Lacey," my mother held my shoulders so I would face her, "in situations like these we may get separated or one of us won't make it. I want you to know that I love you."

"Don't say that." Tears flooded my vision and everything became blurry.

"After earthquakes there are usually tsunamis. I want you to run and find high ground without me. I'll try to find a way." She rushed to tell me the intructions. "Go now."

"No. I'm not leaving you." I whimpered. And just like that a crack formed in between us, splitting the ground in half. The ground popped up and knocked me over. I looked up and my mum had disappeared.

My theory was that she fell in the large crack; she probably didn't make it. But I had to survive. For her.

Before I knew it I was on my feet, running to find the highest hill I could. The earthquake had stopped so I didn't have a lot of time. Many other people had the same idea an went to the local park which had many large hills. But, I kept running.

I stopped running once I got to the top of a large hill. I coughed and took heavy breathes but stopped once I saw the wave that was coming towards us. Where I was was not going to save me.

Before I knew it the wave had slammed into my body and I was going with it. I struggled to get to the surface to take a breathe. The wave was moving too fast. More and more water was flooding in and the water was getting deeper and deeper.

Was this the end? Was I really going to die? I tried my best and that's what counts, right?

And then I slammed into something, felt a sharp pain, and blacked out.

A/N: Helloo!! Okay, so let me over a few things here to clear things up.

Kaya Scodelario is casted as Lacey. I'll have the cast list up as soon as I figure it all out. On the web, I think it'll be on the side under where the cover is and on the mobile app I know it's at the end of every chapter or in the story's profile or something.

This story is an AU. This means you do not need to be a fan of One Direction to read this book. This book isn't written about the band; they're just characters and they haven't met until the whole disaster happens.

This is a completely original story. I created it in my mind. The events, the names, the characters. If I find out you've been stealing my ideas, it'll report you.

I also apologize if some things may be inaccurate or misspelled. I usually realize mistakes long after they happen.

Feedback is much appreciated so leave some in the comments. If you don't understand anything, don't hesitate to ask! Thank you for reading, please vote and comment!
