December 2005 - Rewind

Carlisle, Esme, Jasper, Alice, Rosalie, Emmett, and Melaina celebrated Christmas in New York. It was a rare white Christmas; usually it rained in Forks, of course.

Esme decorated the wooden mansion for Christmas with the help of Alice and Melaina. Alice and Mel took turns standing on furniture to hang up the twinkling lights around the house, which amused Emmett to no end.

"You two have to dress like elves for Christmas!" Emmett said with a Cheshire grin.

"No," both girls said together.

Alice helped Mel off the kitchen counter, then tossed a box of outdoor decorations at their burly brother and shooed him away.

"Are you all Christian?" Melaina asked, gazing at their holiday work of art. She had seen only one cross in their old house in Forks and the same one in Ithaca. It hung above the door to Carlisle's study.

"None of us practice the faith since we turned," Carlisle told her.

Mel frowned. "Why do we celebrate Christmas then?" She didn't know what religion she was, but her mother was Christian, so she assumed the same for herself.

"It's a time to celebrate family with snow, and decorations, and gingerbread cookies."

"But you don't eat cookies."

"You sure do!" Mel whipped around to face Emmett. She lunged at him with a war cry, and he caught her in his arms easily. "You're as ferocious as a newborn kitten, Mel."

Mel pouted; Emmett laughed.

"I swear, if this is what I think it is..." Mel threatened Emmett as she pulled out two matching boxes for her and Alice from under the tree.

Emmett held his hands up innocently, but his bright eyes were full of mischief.

Alice ran a hand through her shaggy hair and sighed. "It is."

They opened their boxes together to reveal their gift from Emmett.

Elf outfits, of course.

Alice's set was red and white, and Mel's was green and white. It came with a fluffy dress, socks, and a headband.

Melaina tossed the silver tissue paper at her brother who was laughing hysterically. "You must be a South pole elf," he said through his laughter.

Surprising vampires was simply not possible, so Mel enlisted Alice to help her with gifts for the family. She would know what they were getting anyways.

Mel reached under the glowing Christmas tree and brought out a flat manila folder with snowflakes painted on the front.

"Um, so this one is from me. It's for the whole family," she said shyly. "Who wants to open it?"

Emmett raised his hand like a kindergartener and bounced in his spot on the carpeted floor. Mel handed the folder over to him.

"They're going to love it," Alice squealed. Mel slapped the excited pixie's leg to shush her before she gave anything away.

The group watched as he tore open the top of the packaging and slid out a piece of paper. He scanned over the words. "That's so cool!"

"Would you like to share your knowledge with the class?" Jasper asked, leaning forward from the couch to snatch the paper from Emmett's hands.

"The Cullen Star." Jasper looked at Melaina with admiration in his gold eyes. "She named a star after us," he explained to the others who were still out of the loop.

"I tried to find something that would be eternal, but that was as close as I could get."

They passed around the letter of confirmation for The Cullen Star. "We will search for it tonight, if it's clear," Carlisle promised. "That was such a thoughtful gift, Mel."

"You'll probably have an easier time finding it than I did, but yeah." Mel smiled. Her heart soared with happiness.

She only wished Edward and Savannah were there with her too.
